Next year, the next social will always be the best social of your life.

Some of the best days of my life have already been spent (very slowly) chugging pints and covered in face paint (big shoutout Chloe and India), so I am with you all in thinking, ‘how could socials possibly get any better?’. If I were social sec, this will be answered and then answered again each week. Being the only? fresher who hasn’t missed a Wednesday this year, I’ve got plenty of market research! A secret social, ‘ou est le poulet?’* and a lifeguard and learners theme are just a few spoilers for the best day of the week next year! Despite having no cricket experience (yet), I would also love for us to show we are a sports club with a primary school sports day social- the wheelbarrow skills I saw on tour are crying out for a bigger stage!

Maintaining UOLWCC’s welcoming, inclusive environment is crucial to me- I get very competitive at games night and bring the best snacks to film night, so planning plenty of sober socials really excites me (reckon my liver would agree!). Time spent together, without alcohol, would also majorly increase the chance of conversations being remembered, making bonds within the club even stronger (and great chance to get uni advice from older members!). Plus, my time management skills extend to the smallest of details- I always leave time for an amazon backup plan before scouring charity shops for social outfits and I genuinely do plan my weeks around Wednesdays, so you can trust that I’ll always stay committed to the role.

But on a soppy one, I am someone who can be quite quiet in new situations and was worried this could be the case for cricket socials, but my confidence has grown massively and (as I’m sure most of you can vouch for) I have not shut up at socials all year. A big reason for this is the work Chloe and India have put into making socials the funnest times for everyone and truly the highlight of my uni experience (might not have dropped out if I’d been in UOLWCC last year lol). Making sure all new freshers get this same experience was a big motivation in why I chose to run for social sec, so I would be very grateful to get this chance. However, social sec or not, while I am a member of UOLWCC, it will always be a club that only ever gets better.

Wow…the time has come for me to throw my name in the hat for the opportunity to become your social sec.

My time at Leeds would not have been the same without Women’s Cricket. I was terrified of coming to University and after a very short stint in cheer I found my home in UoLWCC. Under the care and guiding hands of current social secs India and Chloe, I have learnt the valuable importance of knocking all of the air out of your beer funnel and the quintessential art of licking off a popworld stamp.

It is through this welcome that I believe we will have the best year ever and form and further develop friendships that I am sure will last a lifetime.

As your possible future social sec, I vow to:

- Maintain the legacy of UoLWCC as well as our close knit ties with both mens lacrosse (Chloe) and mens cricket (Ina) .
- Increase popworld attendance in order to regularly secure 2 bottles of sourz without any lickage
- Regulate pint chops for increased efficiency during boat races
- Encourage all members to download and religiously use beer buddy
- Manage and supervise the Mischief cricket corner

In all honesty, I am hoping you will be miserable on a Thursday because your Wednesday will be so good. I know we all love a beer and a dragon soop but let's not forget the importance of sober socials where we can really connect and bond. Or at least remember our connecting and our bonding as there is truly nothing like a popworld dance circle to create lifelong friends. On the sober social front I am quite partial to curry nights, long walks and a coffee, as well as the odd wine glass painting event.

After witnessing all of the hard work the committee has put into making this year so amazing for me (as well as the sneak peek of life as social sec I received at freshers revenge) I feel as if I am now ready to take on the responsibility of this role. I want to make sure next year is enjoyable for every member of women’s cricket. This year has been amazing and if appointed social sec I will continue this legacy and aim to make the year one to truly remember...or not.

Wherever you are reading this, in your kitchen, at the library, hopefully at Terrace, imagine your quality of life increasing exponentially knowing that your next Wednesday could be organised by me, Roisin. Cricket has been integral in my university experience, especially due to the hard work put in by this year’s committee. I have watched and admired how they have organised and conducted Wednesdays with flair each week. Consequently, I understand the responsibility that comes with this role. The power to influence people’s social lives, their opportunities to make friends and most importantly, build as a team. I undertake to commit myself fully to this duty, the natural option compared to studying. My hours in the library will be committed to you… a risk I’m prepared to take. Fortune favours the bold and bold I will be. Get ready girls it’s going to be a bumpy (but very memorable) ride. Socials have been drafted in dedication and honour to making this year live up to the glory days of Chloe and India… and some. Of course, the well-loved social classics will be played, however the creativity knows no bounds. Come ready.

Needless to say, sober socials will be regular and just as lively as the typical tone of a Wednesday. Catering to all is what makes this club special, we are a family. Admittedly, I was apprehensive of the socials when I first joined. Given this, I can empathise with newcomers of the club, creating a friendly, fun atmosphere without any pressure. There will be pressure… however delegated to those who LOVE it. Eventually, every worm will turn.

My friendships within the club are strong, an important aspect of this role owing to the need for help to ensure smooth communication throughout committee and optimal success each week. I am keen to liaise with other societies for some brilliant, (not so memorable) joint socials.
