My name is Katherine Stanton and I would like to be one of your pre-clinical reps.
I was inspired to apply for this position after attending several cutting edge events, including the suturing session, talk on career pathways and several of the weekly sessions on surgery in different specialities. These left a lasting impression upon me and highlighted the important role Cutting edge plays within the medical school. Pre-clinical students typically have limited exposure to surgery as a field, particularly those who had their placement directly impacted by COVID. The early exposure to surgery as a speciality, through the events organised by Cutting Edge, is essential to allowing students , such as myself, to explore their interest in the field and de-mystify it.
Having worked as vice president of both the Research Society and Medical society at my Sixth Form, I have experience in balancing my time along with networking and developing good relationships with both staff and different professionals to help organise events and talks, while working closely with the rest of the society team. I also put together revision and university advice sessions and resources and helped to adapt the way these were delivered during COVID, to further help our year. These are skills that I believe make me a good candidate for this role.
Going forwards as a pre-clinical rep I would aim to continue cutting edges work by creating links with other societies to explore the wide reach of surgery and look at working with the surgical societies within other medical schools to allow us to run a larger conference with a greater number of professionals from different backgrounds and fields. I would like to set up a journal for cutting edge, showcasing student articles and interviews with professionals. Additionally, I want to make use of the amazing Thackray museum and other surgical museums around the country with society trips to visit them. Your opinions matter to me, so I will use your feedback to create more of the sessions and revision you want from the society.

Hi, my name is Thomas Sturt and I am currently a first year medic here at Leeds!

As an engaged member of Cutting Edge over the past year, as well as having previous experience as a representative, I wish to put myself forward for the position of 'Pre-Clinical Rep'.

I recognise the importance of representing others by providing a distinct and helpful form of communication and would welcome the opportunity to play a part in a society that continues to engage students. By fostering productive relationships with society and committee members alike, I would relish the chance to develop inclusive events for the pre-clinical years and continue to raise the profile of Cutting Edge among these year groups.

As a committed and dynamic team-player, with experience of organising and increasing the accessibility of initiatives, I wish to join a society which has provided me with several influential opportunities, notably the ‘SCTS INSINC Conference’ in Nov 2020 where world-renowned surgeons shed light on their inspiring careers to date.

If elected ‘Pre-clinical Rep’ I would aim to galvanise a clear-cut means of communication for students in pre-clinical years to ensure they are made aware of the wide-ranging, enriching, and exciting opportunities available thanks to the ‘The Best Medical Society 2022’.
