Hi, my name is Sana and I am a 2nd year medical student, running for Speciality Representative this year. I wish to allow others to gain an insight into different specialities and educate them on different pathways. Prior to medical studies i was unaware of the range of specialities that are available. Through work experience and medical placement, i have had the chance to experience different specialities including paediatric surgery which has really made me appreciate the differences between them. Researching more about different specialities unlocked more opportunities and gave me an insight into the array of career pathways available. I am passionate about educating others on these hidden prospects which can have a large impact on their careers. One of my main focuses for this role would be to improve accessibility towards BAME communities; as a member of this community myself, i feel the duty to represent others and to provide them with a safe space. BAME communities are underrepresented, particularly in surgery, so i would organise talks to encourage education and diversity. I believe i am suitable for this role as I am well organised; i would be enthusiastic in approaching speakers and encouraging them to contribute to CuttingEdge, further educating our fellow members. Furthermore, I would like to inform our members on how different medical specialities are incorporating innovation and technology into their work. Hi, my name is Sophie. I would like to continue on in my role as Speciality Representative to further expose students to multiple specialties in an accessible way, facilitating engagement in a range of potential future careers and research opportunities.

My interest in neurosurgery was solidified through the mentor scheme and summer placement programme, therefore I conducted my MRes immersive technology research project in neuro, which I hope to publish. I have also spent time with ENT and general surgeons, observing multiple complex and fascinating operations.

I have really enjoyed being on the Cutting Edge committee this academic year. During the year I organised a neurosurgery event and I am currently in the process of trying to implement immersive technology events for the society. I would like to continue doing this as part of the committee. I believe I have the necessary experience to do this effectively.

If chosen, I would relish the opportunity to share my enthusiasm for neuro, ENT and general surgery with others. I would like to organise engaging and stimulating events for these specialties, highlighting innovative and novel research. I would also aim to implement and organise surgery-based immersive technology events.

Hi, I’m Becky, a graduate and 1st year medical student.
Interested in surgery but not sure which specialty? Join the club! According to the Royal College of Surgeons there are 11 different surgical specialties including academic surgery. It can be difficult to know where to start, especially in the earlier years of med school when less clinical placement takes place.
My surgical specialty of interest is academic plastic surgery (or maybe Vascular!) and since starting medical school, I have reached out to plastic surgeons in the region for shadowing opportunities and ways in which to build a strong portfolio aimed at a surgical career.
I am resourceful and organised and have experience of organising educational events on committees at a local and national level. I hope to create opportunities for students to explore the different surgical specialties and to compliment and work alongside the other Cutting Edge Specialty Representatives. I hope to see you soon as part of the Cutting Edge Committee.
