Hi I’m Erin, a first-year International Development student who has become an active member of Polis across the year by attending regular socials, talks and events. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my year at Leeds and Polis has played a huge part in this. By attending socials such as the Otley run and pub quizzes, Polis has allowed me to connect with other like-minded individuals across a range of courses, who have now become some of my core friends. Because of this, I am running to be one of your social secs for next year to continue and expand socials to ensure both new and returning students have a fantastic year. Whilst continuing to maintain nights out, pub quizzes etc I have other ideas to make Polis more varied. One of my core aims is to further develop connections with other societies both within Leeds and externally via joint socials and trips. I’d love to introduce a range of socials such as sport-based events or even a trip abroad to reach more members interests. I believe I have the necessary skills of strong communication and a love of organisation to work productively on committee this year. These skills will enable me to keep up to date with prospective events in Leeds whilst promoting Polis to expand our membership further. I have experience working collaboratively with businesses through running campaigns on student led projects which taught me valuable skills of working in a team environment whilst connecting with companies. This will enable me to organise future socials and contact venues for discounted drinks and tickets with confidence. I hope to work with you all next year and organise some nights out to remember! Hi, I am Lucy and I am a member of POLIS society studying international relations! While being a first-year student I have enjoyed a range of fun activities, many of which have been with the POLIS society. Having participated in notable POLIS events this year such as the Winter Ball, Otley Run and Secret Social, I have a good understanding of the social events which are popular within the society. I would use this knowledge to arrange a wide range of socials from secret socials to pub quizzes to sober socials. I would also be keen to popularise and expand pre-drinks before club nights to make it more accessible to socialise within the society.
As an avid organiser I have often researched and planned fun events with my university friends such as bowling, picnics, watching university plays and going to fairs such as Leeds food festivals and Better Days festival. I would take initiative to do the same for POLIS society researching exciting local events and new sober social ideas.
I am a strong communicator as displayed through my role as Chair to the School Council at my secondary school where I communicated with pupils and staff to make effective change happen. I would use this experience to contact a variety of different event organisers and businesses to receive tickets for social events.
