I am Rubab Ali, a third-year international medical student at the University of Leeds. I was born and raised in Lahore, so you could say I'm THE MOST PAKISTANI PERSON YOU WILL MEET IN LEEDS (honestly enough reason for you to vote for me). When I first arrived in this city, I faced numerous challenges during those initial months. Everything seemed overwhelming, unfamiliar, and quite daunting. From the little things like getting a new sim card, navigating the airport, locating halal food and desi grocery shops to making the right friends and dealing with homesickness, I've been through it all. I genuinely believe that my personal experiences make me a perfect candidate for this position, as I've learned from my own challenges and can now use that knowledge to help fellow students avoid similar pitfalls.
I am acutely aware of the barriers that can make it difficult for international students to settle into a new environment far from home. That's why I'm committed to creating a smoother transition for other international students as their representative. With this role, I aim to bridge the gap and provide you with an authentic desi community, local Pakistani restaurants, and opportunities to engage in quintessential Pakistani activities. Ultimately, my promise to you is to weave the rich tapestry of Pakistani culture into your daily Western life here as best as I can.
