PREAMBLE...

Hi, I’m Jonny (He/They/Him), I love music and I love vinyl. There are few things I enjoy more than turning up my speakers, dropping the stylus, and getting lost in the music. You’ll often see me around the Kirkgate Record Fair and rummaging in the depths of The Wall Of Sound. I love that the Union Music Library exists and I hope that I can make it loads of fun and create a lovely community around it :)

A BIT ABOUT ME...

-I’ve been collecting Records for around Five Years and have recently expanded to CDs and cassette tapes. I’m a huge audio nerd and love all kinds of physical media.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE-

LEEDS LGBT SOC 2022/23-
Last year I was a welfare officer. This involved helping to plan and put on many social events and was a good introduction to being on a committee.

COME PLAY WITH ME-
I’m creating a workshop/panel-style event with CPWM, a celebration of Physical media, and will act as a guide for young people starting out with record collecting. This will take place This September and could be a great way to get new members engaged! I’ll also be doing a placement with Press On Vinyl in Middlesborough over the summer who I hope to collaborate with on an event next year.

LEEDS 2023-
Collaborating with others to put on an event highlighting music culture in Leeds. Alongside this, I have taken part in training on many aspects of event planning, promotion, and creating safer spaces. I have become trained in ‘safe nights out’ through this scheme.

MY VISION FOR THE SOCIETY-

To bring people together over their love for music and the tangible ways we listen to it.
I want the Society to have regular social events such as listening parties, ‘bring your own singles’ sessions, pub socials gigs, and more. I’d also love to bring back classic events such as Strange Parade and Sunday Slump. I’d love to collaborate with other societies such as Album Review and Bandsoc, and with the wider Leeds Music Community such as local record stores, venues, and record labels. I would create a weekly newsletter with contributions from our members and others.
I’d like to utilize the budget to expand and diversify our catalog, and possibly invest in a record-cleaning machine to help preserve our collection for years to come and help our members keep their records clean :) I treat my records like my children, and this care will be extended to the thousands of items in the UML, including keeping our Discogs library up to date.

Hello everyone! I’m Reece, 2nd year Chem Eng student from Manchester, I’ve been in the society since the start of this uni year and after having absolutely rinsed the music collection in the library wanna run for your VP. I think the society has been great this year, not only for the ridiculous record collection but also for how great the space is to meet some really lovely like-minded people and get all pretentious about whatever obscure record we have all heard in the last week. I have a lot of ideas that I think could really push the society forward, the main one being cohesion and collaboration between the music societies of Leeds. Over the last semester I have hosted my own show on LSR and since getting fairly involved with the society, think that a weekly UML slot on the radio would be a perfect way to give the library more exposure. Since coming to university, I have played quite a few gigs in Leeds and know the local scene pretty well, I’ve heard a lot of people mention it already, but I also do think the library sessions should return in full force next year. Another great thing about the library is its accessibility, we all know how ridiculous the price of old records can be and I think the society does a great job in giving students (most of which are skint) a way to enjoy these records without blowing their entire loan. I also think a great way to allow more society member input would be by organising socials at vinyl fairs around Leeds (e.g the monthly fair at Kirkgate market), the reason I know about most of these fairs is through other society members so may as well make it an organised meetup. Additionally, I think more socials could be done through listening parties, this could even be linked to the album review society to further the collaboration between different music societies of the uni. Finally, lets get an actual up to date catalogue of the music in the library guys. I hope I can get your vote 😉

Hello UML! I am a second year student studying the very vaguely titled Global Creative Industries which centres around Arts and creative management, marketing and politics and is spread over four schools (Music, Media, Fine Art and PCI). Having played the guitar and sung since I was 8, I quickly became obsessed with all things musical (sorry mum and dad) and now play 5 more instruments, Dj (like everyone else in Leeds) and interned at Abbey Road Studios.

I’m super invested in diversifying music participation and I believe music participation begins by listening! I’d like to reach out to students that don’t feel particularly welcome/comfortable/represented in the music scene change that to foster a more inclusive community on campus.

I have marketing experience working with clients such as Adobe, Jäegermeister, Corona, HostelWorld and the UK Gas Distribution Network and I would love to use this experience to reach out to organisations for sponsorships to buy more records and have more opportunities for events.

I know many users of UML are musicians and I think it would be cool to organise an instrument exchange! Instruments are super expensive and it’s always fun to try something new/ for students who haven’t bought their instruments to uni to get a chance to practice. I also think it would be fun for everyone to bring along their instruments and have chill jam sessions in the library.
