Hi guys! My name is Abi and I have been part of LUURC for 2 years so far, however i have been shooting competitively for almost 9 years! You may have seen my name floating around the group chat since I have been working closely with Tom to try and resurrect the society from last year. To that end, I have decided to run for Captain in this years elections and so I would like to tell you a little bit about me and my plans for the society for those of you who haven’t met me.

This year I organised our first competition EVER as a society back in November, something I want to organise more of next year now that the society is back up and running. I have also been in discussions with the armourer who is looking after our rifles temporarily, and we are looking into getting some new rifles along with other equipment to make our society more self sufficient! My background is in full bore target rifle shooting, something you will all have the opportunity to do on our bi-annual trip to Bisley. This year I have organised for myself and two others to shoot the 10 day inter-national full bore competitions over the summer in Surrey (the largest target rifle competition in the world!), which is quite a big deal since Leeds Uni have never taken a team to shoot at this level before!

As for my plans for next year, I plan to get everyone on the range at least once a week shooting prone .22 with the option of attending an extra session per week to shoot standing air rifle. Competition wise, I’d like to give everyone the opportunity to shoot postal competitions, and a team of 8 (to be selected based on commitment to the society) to go on to shoot some in-person competitions.

A lot of people find trying a new sport (especially this one) quite daunting, and so I have spoken to Morley (our home range) who are happy to let us bring some of you along for GIAG sessions that we will subsidised so that it is free of charge to you. These will be held at the start of the year, along with theory sessions, so that we can get you all shooting safely.

Dear members of the University of Leeds Rifle Society,

I am presenting to you as a candidate for the position of Rifle Society Captain. Over the past two years, I have had the privilege of serving as the social sec and general secretary of our esteemed society. These experiences have allowed me to witness first-hand the dedication and passion our members have for the sport of shooting. Now, I am eager to take on the role of Captain and continue fostering an inclusive and thriving community for all shooters at our university.

1. As your Captain, my primary goal will be to provide you with more opportunities to engage in shooting events. I understand the challenges we have faced recently due to the change of shooting range, making it difficult for our members to participate in the sport they love. Rest assured, I am fully committed to addressing this issue and ensuring that our society thrives. I pledge to organize a wider range of shooting events, including trips to Morely, Huddersfield full bolt and pistol range, and even the prestigious Bisley. By expanding our horizons, we can explore new shooting experiences and push our limits as marksmen.

2. I believe that a vibrant social atmosphere is essential for the growth of our society. I will strive to provide a diverse range of social activities that cater to everyone's interests. Whether it's laser tag, paintball, clay shooting, axe throwing, or memorable club nights, there will be something for everyone. These socials will not only strengthen the bonds between members but also create lasting memories beyond the shooting range.

3. Transparency and open management are integral to the success of any organization. If elected as Captain, I will ensure that our society operates with openness and inclusivity. I will regularly publish committee meeting reports to keep you informed about the decisions we make and actively encourage open discussions among our members. Your opinions and ideas matter, and I am committed to creating an environment where everyone's voice is heard.

4. I am excited to announce that we will be participating in the BUCS Rifle competition. This will be an excellent opportunity for us to showcase our talent and determination on a larger stage. I will work closely with the team to prepare and train rigorously, so we can compete at our best and bring glory to our university.

I humbly ask for your support and trust as I seek the role of Rifle Society Captain. Together, we can build a stronger and more vibrant shooting community at the University of Leeds.
