Hello, I am Kiy, I am currently on my year abroad and I will be entering my third year of BA Japanese and Asia Pacific Studies this September.

I have a multicultural background as I am part-British and part-Jamaican, and I have been interested in Japanese culture for five years, Latin American culture for fifteen years, and I am also interested in a variety of other cultures.

In terms of inclusivity, I am transgender and autistic. I have often been afraid to go to events and speak to new people because I was afraid of being discriminated against, or because I knew the event would be too stressful for me to attend. For this reason, I want to be a person that people can talk to if they ever feel uncomfortable at any of our events. I want to make sure that anyone can attend our events, regardless of whichever disability they have or community they are part of.

Another important thing is culture shock and loneliness when coming to a new country. I have lived in four different countries and in one of them I experienced bad culture shock. I felt stupid because it was my dream to live abroad, and yet sometimes I was too afraid to even go outside. I went alone and had no support, so I want to do my best to make people coming to Leeds feel supported. When people feel like they have no support, I want to be the support.

I have some ideas such as creating a guide to Leeds (how to use public transport, where you can get your hair cut, British customs, how to receive mental health support, information on things such as how to set up a bank account in the UK and how to use the University of Leeds website, etc.). All of this would be in English and Japanese.

I also think a group trip to an iconic place in the UK such as the Lake District or Peak District (hiking), Warwick Castle, Stratford-upon-Avon (the home of Shakespeare), North York Moors, the Natural History Museum in London, Gainsborough Old Hall or the Beatles Museum in Liverpool could be a good idea. In terms of Japanese cultural events, we could visit a Japanese garden, attend a Japanese movie screening or go to a Japanese restaurant together.

I also think it would be wonderful if we could have beginner Japanese lessons or perhaps cultural lessons such as tea ceremony or martial arts.

I want to do everything I can to make both home and international students feel welcome here (at both Leeds and the society) and have a great time.

こんにちは！カイです。今は、留学していて、今年の９月に日本語とアジア太平洋研究を専攻している３年生になります。

イギリスとジャマイカの混血なので、多文化のアイデンティティを持っています。そして、５年間日本、１５年間ラテンアメリカの文化に興味があります。そして、他の文化にも興味があります。

僕はトランスジェンダー、自閉症を持つ人です。差別されるのが怖かった、またストレスがかかるために、よくイベントに行って、新しい人々と話すことがとても怖かったです。そのために、もしかして誰かがこのサークルのイベントで不快になる場合、その人が話せる人になりたいです。持っている障害や背景に関わらず、人々がサークルのイベントに参加できるようにしたいです。

もう１つ大切なことは新しい国に行くカルチャーショックや孤独です。３つの国に住んでいて、１つの国で悪いカルチャーショックを体験しました。海外に住んでいることは僕の夢でしたが、外に出ることが怖すぎて、バカみたいに感じました。一人で行って、サポートがなかったので、リーズに行く人がサポートされていると感じていることがほしいです。サポートがない場合、僕はサポートになりたいです。

アイデアが色々あります。例えば、リーズのガイドを作ることです。そのガイドに、公共交通機関の使い方や髪を切れる場所やイギリス人の習慣やメンタルヘルスのサポートや銀行口座を開設することやリーズ大学のウェブサイトの使い方など含むつもりです。全部は英語と日本語で書いてあります。

イギリスにある有名な場所に行くことはいいアイデアと思います。例はLake District (ハイキング)やPeak District (ハイキング)や Warwick CastleやStratford-upon-Avon (シェイクスピアの家)やNorth York MoorsやロンドンのNatural History Museumや Gainsborough Old Hallやリバプールのビートルズ博物館です。日本の文化的なイベントの観点から、一緒に日本庭園に行ったり日本の映画を見たり日本のレストランに行くこともできます。

初心者向け日本語の授業、あるいは、茶道や武道など文化的なクラスを開催することは素敵だと思います。

国内学生と海外からの学生の両方がここで（リーズとサークルの両方で）歓迎されていると感じ、素晴らしい時間を過ごせるように、できる限りのことをしたいと思っています。
