Hi, my name’s Claire and I studied Financial Mathematics this year but, after realising it was the world’s most monotonous degree, I am studying Medical Microbiology next year (whoop fresher again). Although I hated my course this year it hasn’t stopped me from having the absolute best time in Leeds and that is all down to societies, in particular ballet!


I think I can speak for all freshers this year that, despite the classic Fs on our heads, we were all immediately included. There were no feelings of superiority within the society with everyone integrating between the different age groups. This is something I would love to replicate next year, if I was lucky enough to be Social Sec, to the new freshers as it made a daunting prospect so easy and exciting. Katie did this from the start by, for example, having a member of committee, a returner & a fresher in each team for drinking games which I would love to recreate.


Every single social, whether that be sober or very not sober, has been amazing this year. Some particular favourites of mine have to be the Otley Run and pottery painting, both of which I think we should do again; we’ll have full crockery sets by the time we graduate! I think sober socials are important for including all members of the society. It allowed us to meet more lovely people who we may not have seen at drinking socials or in our classes! Some other sober social ideas include pizza nights, nights at the theatre, laser tag, to list a few.  


Then in terms of drinking socials, I would continue our beloved collaboration with the one and only Revs, and then Warehouse for Mischief. Also, Fruity Friday (or even Wednesday if we’re lucky again), a mystery weekend, karaoke, joint socials, charity events etc. The majority, of course, would include fancy dress themes (OAPs and VIPs, High School Musical are a couple of ideas I have).  


I would love the opportunity to be social sec and hopefully continue to make ballet socials some of the best nights out at uni! Ballet has always been a huge part of my life, having started lessons at the age of 3. My first year at uni has been enriched by being a member of Ballet Society, probably due to the guidance from my favourite ballet member Melly, but also the lessons, competitions and socials have been some of my favourite memories so far! As a member of Ballet’s committee I would work hard, alongside the rest of the team, to ensure Ballet Society continues to be as amazing as it is today!

I want to be social sec because i really like interacting with all different members of the society and finding ways to get everyone involved. Also, socials can provide a more relaxed way to check up on people, especially freshers as it can be daunting at first and i want everyone to feel they have somewhere/someone. Plus, i love organising things so choosing themes, coming up with ideas and booking the venues for the different socials would be very well suited. Being class rep this year provided a chance to practice some of this organisation and i’ve loved it! As well as the usual things, i would dedicate a few socials to exploring Leeds a bit more, finding new places to visit so we all get to know the city better. I think i’m very well suited to this role as i’m chatty, approachable, love partying and having fun but i will always ensure other people are having fun as well. I want all members to enjoy the social aspect of ballet as for me, it’s one of the best parts.
