Hi! My name is Alex, I am a Physics student currently on my Year aboard in Helsinki ready to get back to Leeds and of course the Ballet Society next year. For my final year at Leeds I would love nothing more than to take on the role of President of this amazing society that has been such a big part of my university experience since day 1.

I have always said that the Ballet society has been a huge highlight of my time in University and it was only enhanced when I got the opportunity to take on the role of Treasurer in my second year. Getting to work so closely with the rest of the committee made me appreciate how much hard work goes into making this society as great as it is. In experiencing this I have been inspired once again to be involved and continue to make Ballet the best it can be, this time hopefully as your President. Further inspiration to apply for this role has come from the previous Presidents I have had the pleasure of knowing. From Sophie in my first year being such a welcoming and important figure to us freshers, to working closely with Millie on committee and seeing her dedication behind the scenes and to now witnessing Ellen and how her love for Ballet has influenced the society this past year. Not to mention all the other amazing committee members over my time that have truly made being a part of the Ballet society the most incredible fun filled experience.

During my time as Treasurer I gained and improved on many valuable skills that I feel would be transferable for the role of President. One quality is my time management skills and ability to meet deadlines when dealing with teacher payment and ensuring classes and shop items go up on time. Another is my organisational skills that were developed in having to keep accurate records on the society’s finances; this ability will come in useful when overseeing multiple committee members and keeping track of the different aspects required to make the society run. Furthermore, by being on committee previously, I have been given a great appreciation and understanding of each role individually, which I believe will aid me in supporting the other members to the best of my ability.

Since joining the society, I have participated in technique/pointe/show classes, been a part of the intermediate competition team and taken part in my fair share of socials! All of which I can’t wait to do again this coming year (the FOMO watching from a far has been intense :( ). By making the most of all the opportunities available I believe I would be able to take on this role of President with a well-rounded knowledge of the society as a complete package.

When thinking about the past few years, there are many aspects of the society that I believe have helped it to thrive and I would be eager to maintain within the coming year. For example, continuing to form and strengthen bonds with other societies and charities in the further development of mixed events and workshops. A key event in our societies calendar is our showcases which I have seen grow from lockdown performances to now shining on stage. Therefore, along with the show rep I would look forward to helping this event further flourish and remain a much-anticipated experience for all.

One potential idea for keeping engagement up throughout the term is having more themed weeks in classes, such as specific music requests for teachers to choreograph to, or fun colours to wear. These themes could possibly even link with that week’s socials plan in hopes to encourage and boost participation or could be in collaboration with another society or charity. This idea would hopefully keep members engaged and continue high attendance throughout the year.

At the end of the day I believe what is most special to me about the Ballet society is the amount of joy and long-lasting memories it has brought me. This has led me to the ambition to provide an atmosphere that is inclusive for everyone and all abilities. Ultimately, I would strive to keep reminding members that whether competing, performing in shows or just participating in classes, our society aims to be a fun and enjoyable space for you to meet like-minded people with similar interests. I would ensure to keep this welcoming, joy filled attitude at the forefront of everything we do.
