I've been a regular of UML this year, having been a member since my first year.
I'd love to be Events Sec! If elected, I will aim to foster relations with the wider student population, reaching out and collaborating with societies from other universities, such as Beckett, Leeds Art, and the Conservatoire!
I've realised that we have had a lot of participant members this year, from various Unis in Leeds. UML is amazing! Basically everyone is receptive to such a chill and cool environment, we just need to make sure more people become aware of this place!
I will aim to increase membership through these collaborations and increase socialising among the Leeds student population, from people who would not otherwise meet, the beauty of third spaces!

Hi, my name is Andy, and since the start of the second semester I have been a regular face in the music library, as well as being a keen volunteer. I find the UML such an incredible place to meet people and spend time, whilst sharing your music taste. I am also a music nerd myself and grateful to have met many like-minded individuals through the library. I therefore think I should be your candidate for events secretary in the music library so I can continue and create more opportunities for networking and music-oriented socials for the community. As well as regular informal socials, of course! This includes:
- Tiny desk concerts and open mics
- More listening parties, perhaps thematic
- Charity shop crawls
- Record fair visits
- Gigs showing talent within the UML
- Music-themed pub quizzes
As a member of a band myself, I also aspire to ensure that the tiny desk and other musical opportunities are as inclusive as possible, as well as low-stakes and beginner-friendly – playing in front of people is scary! I hope that this will be a great opportunity for musicians within UML to either play in front of people for the first time, or just for more experienced musicians to share their talent in a chilled-out environment.
I will also attempt to continue hosting the weekly Sunday Slumps where some time can be spent on Sundays getting the UML in order and doing more relaxed activities, whilst listening to chill tunes – an excellent end to the week.

I joined UML in my first year of University and quickly made incredible friends whilst volunteering in the library. It became my go-to space to unwind between lectures– playing records, CDs and talking with fellow music lovers. This year I have been living in Venice for my year abroad. I’ve realised how much I miss having a dedicated space for music, as well as dedicated events that bring us together; gigs, listening parties, music quizzes…you name it. I would love to be a part of the team bringing such events to you all this coming year!!

I’ve always been passionate about event planning, particularly when it comes to bringing people with shared interests together. My goal is to ensure UML events are super fun but remain safe, inclusive and welcoming. I aim to increase the consistency of socials; as a society I think we would really benefit from weekly events that keep us in regular contact with each other.

I envision socials that encourage music sharing and collaboration such as listening parties, collaborative playlist curation sessions and volunteer mixers. One of my favourite things about UML is the diversity in our members’ music tastes. I love how much music I’ve discovered from interacting with others - music I definitely wouldn’t have discovered otherwise! I want to ensure UML socials continue to celebrate musical diversity and encourage music sharing.

I would also like to host creative workshops that spotlight the talent within our community. This year I’d like to focus not only on absorbing art but also creating it. Some ideas I have for creative socials are lyric writing sessions, jam sessions, record/album painting or even a weekly ‘creative space’ where members are free to engage in their creative endeavors while we listen to some great records!!

I also would really like to host more film screenings; films about music/fictional bands, concert films, documentaries, biopics and even films with notable soundtracks. I hope we can collab with film soc on this one!

Lastly, I'll make sure we host themed parties (with your collaborative playlists on aux, of course), music quizzes and of course otley runs. Most importantly, I aim to increase the number of gigs we are attending. UML is full of live-music lovers and I want to celebrate that as much as possible. As well as this, I will continue the tradition of communal record shopping trips, perhaps even extending our horizons to other cities..road trip??

Ultimately, I want to help make UML an even more vibrant, creative, and connected community for all music lovers.
