Iām Theo, 21, and after I finish my year in industry this year, Iām coming back to Leeds to finish my degree in Politics. I joined UML in my first year and served as Secretary (and Volunteer Coordinator) in my second. Through this role, I have learned how to run volunteering successfully, increase membership, grow our collection, and have made valuable connections with other societies and universities. As with most UML members, I love music and consider buying records my only addiction. I love UML, and one of the main reasons Iām running for President is in an attempt to ensure that UML is not just a weekly event in your calendar, but a meaningful part of your uni experience - as it has been for me.
I have so many ideas for UML, but my main policies are as follows:
1: To make UML an even more accepting and inclusive space for everyone.
Now more than ever, third places - spaces outside home and work -are incredibly important, and having a place on campus where people feel safe and comfortable is a top priority for me. Having lived in Malaysia for 8 years, I know what itās like to be in a new place, and how important it is to have a place to go where you can feel comfortable and welcome. To me, UML is the perfect space for this. As a community space, it has inclusivity and acceptance as its foundations, and this is a key strength that I only want to build on as President. One way I want to accomplish this policy is to introduce a weekly āquiet hourā - either during or after library hours - designed especially for neurodivergent members who feel overstimulated by UMLās sometimes hectic atmosphere. This is an idea based on membersā feedback, as I believe transparent action on feedback is a key responsibility of any leader.
2: To improve the volunteering program.
When I was Secretary in 23/24, there was no such role as āVolunteer Coordinatorā, and so these responsibilities were a key part of my role. I know my way around organising and implementing a fair and efficient volunteering schedule. I want to organise more volunteer socials and implement proper training for volunteers. This will help to increase the feeling of community amongst volunteers, as well as equipping them with the skills necessary to run UML in the way it deserves.
3: To increase collaborations with other societies and universities.
As Secretary, I was able to foster good relationships with other societies, both within and beyond Leeds. As President, I plan to use these connections to further increase the number of collaborations UML has with other societies. As well as other LUU societies, I am also hoping to organise joint socials with similar societies in Nottingham and Sheffield, both of which I was in touch with during my time as Secretary. UML is a society with such broad appeal, and this positions it ideally for collaborations with so many other societies.
4: To organise a regular weekly UML social alongside gigs, quizzes, and more.
I believe UML could really benefit from a regular, weekly social where members can chat, relax, and form stronger friendships within the society. So many of my best friendships at uni started in the music library, and I want everyone else to have that chance as well.
As well as this weekly social, I aim to increase the number of gigs, quizzes, record shopping trips, and other less regular socials. Some of my best memories from my time on committee are hosting quizzes, organising parties, and working the door at gigs. I want to see more events in the UML calendar, and as President, I would be determined to make this happen.
5: UML Abroad
So many societies at university have a trip abroad, so why not us? My vision for this is to organise a trip to somewhere in Europe to visit record shops, listening bars, and go to gigs - giving members a chance to experience another countryās unique music culture.
6: Semesterly reports for transparency, to keep UML working for you.
UML is, and should be, a community-based society, and as such I am committed to taking membersā ideas into consideration and ensuring that everyone is listened to - whether they are on committee, a volunteer, or a member.
As President, I would hold a monthly committee meeting to check our progress on ongoing projects and discuss membersā ideas for the society. Following this meeting, I would publish a report to all members, detailing our ideas, progress, and future plans. I want to grow the bottom-up leadership model of UML, and the first step to this is top-down transparency.
This is by no means an exhaustive list of my ideas. Alongside these main policies, I am, of course, aiming to grow our collection and improve UML as a space and society. I am always open to suggestions and would love as much input as possible. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions - Iām always happy to chat!
I hope youāll consider voting for me for UML President 25/26. A vote for me is a vote for a candidate with enthusiasm, experience, and endorsements.
