Social Sec ā Jodie Gafson
Hey, Iām Jodie! Iām a first-year Film Studies student and a proud member of both the advanced tap class and the competition team. Iām hoping to join even more classes next year and continue growing my love for all things modern dance.
When deciding where to go to university, dance was a huge factor for me. I actually found Leeds Modern before Iād even submitted my application ā and I instantly knew it was the society for me.
Since joining, Iāve fallen in love with the amazing community, the friends Iāve made, and have a huge appreciation for the girls running the society. Thatās why Iād love to give back and be part of the committee ā to help others have the same incredible experience Iāve had.
A real highlight this year has been the Wednesday night socials ā the fun, the chaos, the laughs, and just getting to let loose with some amazing people. Itās honestly been one of the best parts of my uni experience so far.
Iād absolutely love the chance to be your next Social Sec. Iām full of exciting ideas, great vibes and Iām very organised (yes, I do love a spreadsheet). I even helped organise our recent āFreshers Revengeā social and came up with the ābring a decorated eggā idea, which was a huge hit!
If Iām elected, hereās just a taste of what Iād bring to the table:
New Social Ideas:
š¤ Leeds Modernās Got Talent
A chill night at Dry Dock or upstairs in Library where you can show off your skills (dance or otherwise!) with drinks and prizes for the winners.
šŖ© The Next Step Social
Dress as your favourite character, strut your stuff to the iconic theme song, and take part in dance-offs and fashion walks. Bring on the drama!
šÆāāļø Dance Moms Otley Run
Whether youāre Abby Lee Miller, Jojo with the bow, or rocking a Maddie face, itās going to be a hilarious and unforgettable Otley Run. A guaranteed laugh and a cheeky drink (or two).
Inclusivity + Accessibility:
I know socials can be expensive and themed costumes can be a lot. Thatās why Iād love to introduce an āI needā¦ā WhatsApp or Insta group, where anyone can ask to borrow clothes or accessories from others in the society. Whether you need a cowboy hat or a school tie, someoneās got your back ā no one should miss out just because of low funds.
Supporting Freshers:
Iād love to kick the year off with a āGetting to Know Youā social ā separate from a Wednesday night ā somewhere like Terrace or Library Pub. Itāll be a chill chance to meet new people without the loud music and dance floor chaos. Think fun icebreakers like Heads Up, Charades, and Two Truths and a Lie ā a perfect way to feel part of the group before jumping into the wild world of Wednesday nights.
I genuinely love this society and everything it stands for, and Iād be so excited to continue the amazing work Megs and Amelia have done throughout the year. Whether itās planning a chaotic Otley, wholesome talent nights, or just making sure no one feels left out, Iāll bring creativity, organisation, and loads of energy.
With dance love,
Jodie x

Hello everyone I am Lydia, a first year International Relations student, and I would love to be your Social Sec for the 25/26 year in Modern Dance Society!
Since joining the society in September, I immediately felt so welcomed by everyone there and any nerves I had were gone so soon after meeting all the lovely girls. I auditioned for the jazz competition team and was lucky enough to be a part of the Advanced Jazz team this year, and hopefully will be on more classes and teams next year.
I would love to be Social Sec this year to give back to such an amazing society which has made my first year at Leeds so special. Right from the first classes and socials I have had so much fun and met so many new friends. As social sec, I promise to make everyone feel just as welcome and excited to be in Modern Dance as I felt.
I have shown my dedication to the society in many ways. Firstly, I was a member of the advanced jazz competition team this year with our amazing dance Gaga. Secondly, I represented Modern Dance in the improv category at competitions, which I had so much fun competing in, as well as being a helper at the Leeds competition. Thirdly, I have been involved in the LUU show, choreographing the freshersā dance for the upcoming Modern Dance show, and I will be performing in this yearās Varsity dance. I think all of these things demonstrate confidence and commitment to the society, which are both important aspects of being social sec.
Aside from the dance part of Modern, I have been a regular social attendee since the very start of the year, which have been the main reason I want to be social sec. I have loved all the fun themes and costumes this year and want to continue to make Modern socials fun and exciting. I also want to keep pre-drinks super fun with all sorts of party games to get us ready for Revs and Mischief.
In particular, I think that the social media pages for the society have been really helpful for getting information about socials, costume ideas and so on. I would continue to post all social information and pictures on the Instagram page, but also want to introduce a Modern Madness TikTok page for our socials to document all of our Wednesday antics and get Modern famous!
I also want to make sure that our new freshers feel as welcomed into our society as I -and I am sure many others - have felt this year. I want to continue to hold a welcome drinks night for freshers to meet the committee and be able to put names to faces. I also think this is a great opportunity for people to meet without attending a full on social straight away, which I think takes the pressure off it. But most importantly this is a great way to meet other freshers as this is where I met my best friend Ellie, and you wonāt have seen us at a social without each other since!
Finally, I want Modern socials to be as creative and diverse as possible! As social sec, I would love to get feedback on what kind of socials people want to see by putting polls up on social media, including sober socials which I think are a great way to make new friends and get to know others really well. I also want our post-competition socials to be as amazing as they were this year, as this is such a special way to celebrate all our dancing success and party hard after (as some of you will know) some very long competition days! Additionally, as I know friends who have been appointed other societies social secs for next year, I would like to organise more joint socials as I think these are so much fun and a great way to branch out and meet other societies.
Thank you so much for reading my application. Please consider voting for me as your social sec for next year!

Morven Allan

Hi everyone! Iām Morven and this is my first year of studying Law and of being a part of modern dance. I have absolutely adored my year in modern, a lot of due to socials, where I have met some of my favourite people and made some amazing memories (or on some occasions, a lack there of!).
If you know me, you know I absolutely LOVE a social! I have yet to miss a single mischief, and I have even shown up on two occasions with torn ankle ligaments and once with a burst ear drum (I personally think is an achievement however, my mother may say otherwise). I also love to organise fun events, and I hope you all had as much fun at the fresherās revenge social as I did being part of the organisation.
As social sec I would love to:
⢠Continue with the classic socials
ABC, Red flags, Princess and the pea
⢠Add some new themes
Valentines: dress as the last person you got with, Trackies and Tiaras,
Decades
⢠Implement group challenges for the night
Pictures with other societies, free drinks, not falling victim to cricket
corner (probably the toughest one)
⢠Joint socials, secret social and TOUR!!
⢠Regular sober socials
A day trip to York and a school style sports day
I also have lots of ideas for modernās social media. This is really important to me as modernās social media is how I found out about the society before I came to uni!!
⢠I would keep up with the usual social awards and photo dumps
⢠An ongoing behaviour chart for the year
⢠Post social confessions
⢠More modern madness tik toks
Midnight gameshow for those willing
Mini mic interviews at socials and comps
A fun documentation of the social chaos
Keeping the societyās inclusive environment is also something that is very important to me. This stems from a few things including keeping socials budget friendly, including sober socials but also making sure everyone feels safe and that no one feels forced into doing anything they donāt want to.
Being a part of modern dance has been the best thing I have done at uni and I would love to help keep the fun and good memories going! #VOTEMORVENFORSOCIALSEC

Hiya,
Iām Kassia Iām a first year sociologist who has loved every minute of modern dance
I have LOVED the Wednesday night social and never missed a single one which may show my clear love and dedication to it. Along side winning a few modern shout outs which is why I believe I can bring even more fun to the role of social sec!!
From the start the socials have helped me setting in and feel involved thanks to our social secs and committee this year which I aim to do for our upcoming freshers
As well as the bonus nights after comp which I definitely enjoyed dabbing the night away
Within classes I have felt so welcomed and made so many friends through regular classes and extra ones such as choreographing the freshers dance, comps and varsity dance
I have many crazy ideas for you all! Keep the freshers entertained with the wild themes and donāt worry returners will also have some fun themes that we can all laugh about the morning after
As I have loved the weird and crazy themes this year with my handy face paints which will deffo carry on for next year
I also have some fun bonus nights out ideas in my head such as an Otley run, a fridge to fridge and many more š
Social media is a big impact on the modern madness as I would 100% continue idea boards for the themes and social awards plus shout outs
As well as creating a ModernMadness TikTok account which all members can post to on a Wednesday night out and even win a mention out on the insta
Thanks all for reading this VERY quick and brief summary of my reasoning for social sec next year
With love and dabs
