I’m Daisy, a second year Psychology student and have loved my time with Modern over these two years. Dancing with my friends and having so many opportunities has been amazing. Travelling, partying, and making connections, has meant I’m super excited to get even more stuck into the society. I am highly organised and creative, therefore costume representative immediately stood out to me as where my talents would shine.

We all agree that costumes can be so much fun, helping to bring a performance to life, and enhance the talent on stage. I believe that meticulous attention to detail is so important, looking put together, and professional. I am incredibly attentive and precise, meaning I will be hands-on, so everyone can look their best before stepping on stage.

Additionally, I aim to have costumes ordered in advanced to ensure perfect fit and comfort for each dancer, with concerns or alterations being addressed. Enhancing communication with dancers to prioritise inclusivity is extremely important to me. I want to support dancers in feeling confident in their costumes, enabling them to perform at their best, while expressing any preferences.

Currently, I have connection across many dance societies, but aim to make more and promote costume sharing. This will benefit all dance societies, helping us all to adopt more sustainable practices. Sustainability and our ecological footprint as a society is crucial, assuring we use reliable sources. Also, my organisation skills will be used to update and arrange the costume inventory.

Finally, I would like to introduce a small fundraiser during the Christmas showcase, such as a bake sale during the interval, to augment the costume budget. There are small costs for dancers themselves for accessories, and a fundraiser will allow easing these.

Hi! I’m Esme and I’m in first year studying medicinal chemistry. I’ve been a part of modern dance since the start of uni and recently joined Ballet society. I am so happy that I’ve joined and met so many amazing people and participated in some great activities. I would love to be the costume rep for next year and play a larger role in the society.

I have been dancing since I was three and have taken part in many dance shows and competitions and I’ve therefore had a fair few questionable costume. I find that feeling comfortable and confident in your costume can make such a big difference when performing so I would love to take on this role so I can help everyone feel their best. I am a bit of a perfectionist and would see to it that every costume is up to a great standard, and if not, I would make sure I am always available for people to come and get their costumes fixed. I think it’s really important that everyone has their say on what they think which is why I would discuss options with all the committee regularly and send out surveys for all members to fill out and share their opinions.

A couple of my ideas include photoshoots and fundraisers. I think some casual and optional photoshoots would be so much fun and great advertisement on social media for the society. I would love for this opportunity to be available to everyone who is comfortable with it. Obviously some costumes are very expensive so to help the budget I think a fundraiser would be very fun. There are lots of ideas, but my original idea was a costume fun run where we all dress up in fun outfits such as tutus and go on a walk/run with fun challenges in between.

I know that obtaining and sorting out costumes can be stressful at times so if I was selected I would like to get ahead of this early on by making a spreadsheet with all the costumes we already have available with sizes so that all the information is in one place. As well I would like to order costumes as soon as possible so that alterations are addressed quickly. I think a key part of this role is organisation because numbers and sizing can easily get mixed up. I find myself to be rather organised and I do love using excel (who knew half my labs in chemistry would just be working on excel) which I think would be a useful tool in this role and help everyone in the society see costume information clearly.

Hi everyone, I’m Julia and I would love to be your costume rep next year. I’ve been a part of Modern since my first year of university and I’m so grateful for the friends I’ve made, the memories as well as the opportunity to dance at so many different events with modern. Whether it be at the shows and fundraisers, at competitions or varsity I’ve seen and come to appreciate how much organisation goes into keeping this society running. I have been described as a bit of a collector -hoarder- of clothes, but I always prioritise being organised above all else. I love being creative and can always come up with a last-minute fix to a broken accessory or costume.
I am keen to support this section of the society, as costumes are the final push that bring a dance together and can make dancers feel empowered and confident when on stage.

As costume sec, I would prioritise organising our current stock of costumes. As a society, we put on so many shows and events, so it’s so easy to lose track of what we already have and can be reused. I would create a catalogue that addresses what costumes we already have, logging the article, colour, style and size that they are. I would also make sure to assess what condition these are in, whether they are suitable to be re-worn, or whether I can throw in a few stiches to repair them so they’re as good as new. In addition to this, I have connections across many of the dance, as well as the performing arts societies that I can use as a means of increasing costume sharing. This would ensure we have many costumes ready and on hand for performances in advance, but also help us be environmentally friendly and save on our budget.
I would also ensure to arrange our costumes in advance by creating a calendar of upcoming performances to be sure they’re planned, ordered and tried well before the dates that they are required for, to prevent any potential stress. I would ensure that there are enough costumes for everyone by liaising with competition and class reps to make sure everyone is accounted for.
Additionally, as costume sec I would also emphasise keeping an open line of communication with dancers, to ensure that costume, styles and sizes are inclusive. I understand that choosing sizing and costumes can be stressful, so arranging opportunities for dancers to try on costumes before performances will prevent people getting costumes that they feel uncomfortable dancing in. As well as this, I would create polls so that our costumes can best match the feel of our dances and considers many perspectives. As a lead tenant for a 10-bed house in Hyde-park (yikes), organising repairs and sending emails has practically become a hobby for me, so I’m always happy to discuss any concerns with dancers, no matter the time or platform.

I’ve seen what a fantastic job the costume reps have done in the past couple of years, and I hope to take a page out of their book if I become costume rep. I really hope you enjoyed reading my manifesto and see my enthusiasm for becoming costume rep!
