Hey everyone, I’m Jemima and I would LOVE to be your class rep next year. As a fresher, I have absolutely loved getting stuck in with the society this year. I have already made so many memories in the society and met lots of amazing people. Taking classes in Jazz and Tap and being on the Advanced Jazz and Tap comp teams have been some of the highlights of my year.
 
These classes have been really valuable for me. They have helped me to develop my technique in both styles and have allowed me to create friendships whilst doing something I love. Particularly this year as a fresher, these classes have given me a safe space to take my mind of the stress of being in a new environment by giving me the ability to continue my love for dancing whilst at uni.
 
As your class rep, I would make sure communication is seamless, ensuring that absences are registered, and that attendances are monitored. On top of the admin bits, I will express my passion for these classes and encourage people to try something new and get involved in modern. Whether its existing members trying a new style, or non-members who want to give dance a go, I want to create a space for everyone at dance.
 
I feel as though I am an approachable and friendly face, which people can come to and talk about any queries or worries they may be having. I think that understanding the reason for absences is important, because ensuring that all members are happy and healthy is a priority of mine. I am always here to listen and chat to anyone who needs it!

Hi everyone, I’m Summer and I would love to be your class rep for 2024!

I am currently in my first year studying Sports and Exercise Science and have been a part of modern dance since the start of the year. I have been dancing for as long as I can remember, and this year has allowed me to return to what I love. Despite the Wednesday night social hangover, modern dance has been the best part of my university experience so far, and I'm so excited to continue throughout my 2nd and 3rd years. This year I took part in tap classes and I'm hoping to branch out into both jazz and lyrical next year too.

One of my sole focuses as your class rep will be to increase the accessibility to our society so that anyone and everyone can get involved. Since I was 3 dance has provided me with so many memories, it is where I made some of my forever friends and allowed me a safe space to be myself, even on the days when I felt rubbish. I believe everyone should have access to this. Whether you’ve been dancing for years or you’ve never danced before, I want everyone to feel welcomed and a part of our dance family.

Not only this but I LOVE anything and everything organisation, therefore a lot of time will be spent ensuring our registers are up to date and moving between different levels/styles is as stress-free as possible. I also want to make communication between all members of modern dance one of my main priorities, ensuring everyone can get involved in some aspect of our society. I feel that I am an approachable person and a friendly face who is always here even if you ‘just need a chat’ or need to talk about any queries or worries you may have. Alongside this, I will also ensure that every member of modern dance is happy and healthy, as being a sporty girl, this is one of my main passions.

Some ideas I have for next year include…

Open Comp Class:
For this year I would like to introduce a new dance class, called the "Open Comp Class". The idea is to create a space where dancers who aren’t able to commit to the competition team can still participate in weekly classes where they learn similar routines. Within this class, I want everyone from all levels to feel comfortable getting involved and confident enough to contribute their thoughts and ideas if they wish to get involved with some choreography.

Freshers Led Dances:
This year I have also been part of the fresher’s dance for the end-of-year show. This dance was student-led, and I believe this is so important as it allowed us as the new members of the society to form a little community. For next year, I think fresher’s dances should be included within each show and be solely created by our freshers. This will not only allow those who enjoy teaching routines and choreographing dances to get involved but also help new freshers to get to know others who are in the same boat as them. This will make their experience of joining a new society with people they don't know much easier.

Class Only Facebook Group:
Another pledge for this year I have is to create another Facebook group solely for class videos and updates. I know from my own experience scrolling through everything on the Facebook group can be time-consuming and sometimes frustrating. Therefore, by creating a class-only group it would allow us all easy and quick access to class videos.

Feedback Forms:
My final idea would be to create an online feedback form each month to allow everyone to let us know what they enjoy about their classes, and what they would like to see more of within them. Alongside this, at the end of each semester, I would also like to include online forms for dancers to fill out if they would like to switch from their current level or want to get involved with a new style.

Thank you so much for reading my manifesto! I’ve got so many other ideas of how to improve our classes and most importantly ensure you all get the most out of them. I am so thankful to the current committee for making my first year as part of modern dance so fun and for giving me memories to last a lifetime. Hopefully, I can do this too for you all as part of the committee next year!
