Hi, my name is Issie and this year I am hoping to become the new comp rep. Taking the role of Annie and Ellen means there are big shoes to fill but I am hoping that I will be able to do this :). This year I have been fortunate enough to be in three competition teams, these being: Advanced tap, Lyrical and Wildcard. I loved every second competing and supporting the team this year and I was really inspired about how organised and fun our comp season was and that was all due to our amazing comp reps this year. I would be delighted to take on this role myself alongside the second comp rep to create an amazing comp season for everyone. This year I am hoping again to participate in the comp teams for lyrical and tap…only if there’s no nerve beats this year hahaha.
I have new ideas which I would love to bring to the table which can be seen in my poster, and I would love to implement these whilst also taking considerations from others so that everyone can have a say on the competition season as well. I would love to encourage all dancers to push themselves into more duets and solos including new styles such as commercial or street. I would love for a few comp socials to be made if organised with the social secs but of course I know including everyone is a massive part of Modern and at the end of the comp season I would love for a social with all of the dancers, both competition dancers and non-competition dancers to celebrate what an amazing team and society we are and how well we have done as we are going to smash it as always!!!
For our own competition this year I will make sure to be encouraging team spirit again alongside making posters, chants and much more. I would love to introduce an improvisation section and/or a dance off at the end of the day if time allows this. I would also like to introduce an overall winner of the day and a dancer of the day idea which is where everyone can scan a QR code throughout the day and vote for a member of another team who stood out to them both from the judges and dancers. This dancer will then be given an award at the end of the day. The idea of this is to boost encouragement from other unis. I would also like to introduce a dancer’s dancer in our society and after each comp send out a link where people can vote for their favourite dancer of the day, even though it will be hard to choose cause everyone is a slay. This will then be announced at the last comp when we have the comp mini awards. I would also love to introduce a commercial/street number this year and this could be maybe integrated into the wildcard routine.
I would like to think of myself as being approachable, a good listener and trustworthy. I have taken on many responsibilities in the past such as dance captain of my college team which allowed me to learn skills of teamwork and time management which I will carry heavily into this role.
I would love to be your comp rep for the upcoming dance season of 24/25! I would love to include everyone’s amazing ideas to have the best comp season possible, full of lots of fun and laughter. Thank you, good luck to everyone else, I am sure whoever is picked will smash this role 😊.

Hi everyone, I’m Amelia and I’m running to be one of your Competition Reps for 2024/2025.
I am currently in my second year studying biomedical sciences and can generally found in tap on a Monday evening in a colourful pair of tap shoes, although occasionally I like to stamp about while pretending to be Spiderman. I have loved every minute that I have been part of Modern Dance Society and that has only been enhanced by competing this year in inter tap alongside the incredible dancers within this society. Modern has been a massive part of my uni experience so far, at this point it feels more like I’m here for dance and the uni part is on the side - which is just how it should be. I would love to give back into a society that has made my time at Leeds so enjoyable.
The biggest role of the comp rep is organising, I can assure you this is my biggest strength and I’m sure each of my five planners (uni, home/social, work, dance and one that combines everything - in case you were wondering) can confirm this. I truly can’t think of anything more satisfying than organising all aspects of competitions including our own comp Let’s Dance. Annie and Ellen did fantastic job with our comp this year and I would love to continue what they did next year. As comp rep I will work with the other elected rep to decide on the best comps for us to attend, ensuring to have a mix of sizes so we can bring home some trophies and use the bigger comps to build experience and have those wins feel that bit better. To ensure we get wins across the categories I want to be there as a support for inter choreographers, communicating regularly to ensure their teams progressing well and be open for providing any feedback on routines if needed.
Wildcard this year was a massive party celebrating all things modern, my proposal for next year would be to cooperate with other dance societies to learn components of their styles to intertwine into the wildcard number. In semester 1 we could have a dedicated class to this, having a new style taught each week to allow us to build a foundation of the new styles to compose a complete mash up of all things Leeds dance for our wildcard routine.
Comp season goes by so quick, making incredible memories with new and old friends and hopefully coming back with lots of wins. A group meal complete with our comp awards at the end of comp season would be a lovely way to all come back together and decompress the wonderful things that have come from competitions. On top of the awards, I would like to have a dancer of the day at each comp that everyone votes for based off who they think stood out to them both on and off stage that day. This will keep the morale and motivation up over the long days.
This year in modern I feel I have proven myself to be good at working with short timelines and under pressure as well as my dedication as I had 4 weeks to choreograph and clean my solo for intercomp. If I can do that in 4 weeks, I would love to see what I can do for modern in a year as comp rep.
I would like to think of myself as a friendly, approachable and trustworthy person and believe I would make a positive impact by being a member of the committee next year. I really hope I can win your vote to become the next comp rep and continue the fabulous work of Annie and Ellen. I hope I can be a welcoming, friendly face on committee next year.
Thank you for reading, I cannot wait for another year of dance.

Heyyy everyone!! My names Ellen and i’m currently a first year studying Dental Surgery. I’ve been a part of Modern since I joined this year and it has definitely been the best part of my uni experience by far. Comps have been something I haven’t really experienced outside of uni, but they have definitely been a highlight for me! I would love to be your comp rep next year to have the opportunity to help make sure that everyone has the same incredible experience that I’ve had this year. I will make sure that wildcard will be the best it can be with the incorporation of a style that has been very highly anticipated… commercial (because we really can do it all in Modern ;) ). I think I am suited for this role because I consider myself a professional talker, so that will definitely be put to good use for communication and negotiation with other committee members, societies and other unis. I also believe that I am a very organised person, I am a pro at to-do-lists and I have a very aesthetic google calendar, so i will make sure that everyone knows when and where they need to be, to ensure everything is as smooth and enjoyable as possible :) If you’ve read this far thank you for sticking with it, and I hope you’ll consider me for Comp Rep next year 3 xxx

Hi everyone! I’m Holly, a first year Spanish and French student running to be your comp rep for next year! This year, I competed in both inter and advanced comp teams and wildcard.
I’d like to start by saying how smoothly our comp season was run this year by Annie and Ellen, and what a wonderful time I had. Without a doubt, Modern has been the highlight of my first year at Uni. It would be an honour to follow in their footsteps and have the opportunity to replicate the fantastic experience I’ve had for the new freshers and returners next year! While this comp season will be hard to top, I do have a few ideas for the next, which I’ll strive to implement.
One of my main aims is to introduce a flexibility, strength, and conditioning class for the comp teams. If this idea is popular, I’d love to be able to open this up to the wider society also. These elements are vital as dancers, and I want to ensure that we are pushing ourselves to our upmost potential, and this will also hopefully give us an edge over other universities! (I just want us all to have leg holds as insane as Lucy’s).
On a similar note, I’d like to hold a big warm up for the entire team at the start of comp days. Obviously some dancers only dance later in the day and will still need to warm up individually, but I’d like to keep spirits and camaraderie high on long days and early mornings. I want to show the rest of the unis what a strong team we are! Plus, of course this would help prevent injuries and enhance our dancing overall.
As mentioned in my poster, I will definitely be continuing wildcard if given the opportunity, and I’d love to enter a team in the commercial section too. If studio space and time won’t allow for both, I can ensure that commercial would be incorporated into the wildcard. We absolutely slayed the Varsity dance (even with practically no music) and I can’t be letting our commercial talents go to waste!
Another goal I have would be to make comp teams more accessible. At the moment, if you don’t have a spot in a certain style class, you can’t audition for that comp team. This happened to me this year with jazz, which was such a shame, as I absolutely loved both jazz comp routines. I want to make sure that no one misses out next year, and also that we don’t miss out on new talent! Therefore, I’d like to open up auditions to all members of modern next year, though I would have to organise this with the secretary and class rep of course to figure it out in terms of class spaces.
Finally, if given the chance, I’d love to look into strengthening our connections with other dance societies and their competition teams. I think it would be great to extend support for Leeds at competitions even further, and this way we could also watch and support other UoL dance societies. Let’s win that team spirit award next year! I’d like to work with their respective comp reps and potentially coordinate some of our competitions with more dance societies, whilst obviously keeping up the fantastic Ballet X Modern relationship.
Just wanted to end by saying a massive thankyou to this year’s committee and to all the other wonderful dancers for creating the loveliest and most welcoming atmosphere for my first year dancing in Leeds. Here's to making Modern the best it possibly can be! Love Holly xxx

Hi everyone! I’m Natalie and I’d love to be your comp rep next year! I’m going into fourth year studying maths and I do tap and jazz classes. I’ve competed with modern for two years and loved every second of it.
Wildcard this year has been such a success. It’s so fun and allowed everyone from all teams to get more involved. I would love to try and continue this inclusion and do another dance outside of our normal classes. Depending on interest we could do another wildcard, something new with commercial or both. Having two dances would give more opportunities and if everyone decided to do one more dance, we could have more support in the audience for both dances (team spirit I’m coming for you).
Maybe I’ve just been inspired by the Madrid tour, but the different styles of dance we saw were incredible, and I’d love to add this to the wildcard dance. The overall dance could have Latin dance influences and we can even add new styles such as salsa as their own sections.
A few of the comps this year had a commercial category too. This year has seen modern doing commercial in both the varsity dance and the section in wildcard, and both have been insanely good. Instead of trying to have loads of weekend rehearsals we could try and allocate time on Tuesdays, with the intermediate comp practices, to make it easier for people to make it.
The addition of inter team choreographers this year has been so effective, and we’ve had some amazing results from them! I would try to continue this progress by also having a rehearsal, in January/early February, where our wonderful teachers could work with the intermediate comp teams too. This would be an outside perspective to give some extra feedback and to critique technique too. The choreographers have all done so well and put in so much effort this year, a little extra input would help ease the stress and chaos for them, and hopefully give the inter teams an extra bit of confidence to perform even better come comp season.
If you made it this far, thank you so much for reading. I would be so excited to be comp rep next year and cannot wait to see all the modern madness the year brings. Dance love, Natalie xxx
