Hi, my name is Scarlett and I’m a recent graduate in BSc Physics and Philosophy of science at the university of Leeds. I’m currently working as an SEN teaching assistant at a local school. Given that I’m no longer a student, I have a lot of time, energy and passion to dedicate to St Johns, as well as advice gained from first hand experience of what it means to be part of a student volunteering team. I very much value the sense of community and purpose that St John provides, and would love to be part of the team that helps bring up and advocate for the next generation of student volunteers. I am spirited, highly organised and outgoing, and passionate about making first aid a bigger part of the Leeds student community. Heya! If you’re not aware with who I am, my name is Jonathan. I’m a computer science student on my placement year as a trainee information analyst at NHS Harrogate, and current unit logistics lead at the Leeds university unit, and I’d like to apply for the unit manager role.

Since I joined the organisation a little over the year ago, I’ve fallen in love with it and thrown myself into first aid. In the past year, I have over 600 hours logged to me on MyData. That includes attending training, CPD sessions and time spent in my logistics role. In terms of clinical hours, I have over 500 event hours to my name on MyData, and have attended events big and small across the country as a first aider, such as London Marathon, the Grand National, the Great North Run, Manchester Pride and Total Warrior. In that time, I’ve built up a wealth of experiences which I feel compelled to share with you guys to help you make the most out of your volunteering experience. At its core, as unit manager, I want to be there to support you and guide you, and whilst I’ll be the first to admit that I’m fairly new to the organisation, I hope my dedication over the last year speaks to how important St. John has become to me, and how much it matters that I do a good job. In terms of my suitability for the more admin-y parts of the unit manager role, I’m very good with computer systems as a computer science student and a trainee information analyst, so the various IT systems like DIPS and MyData shouldn’t be hard for me to use. When it comes to leadership, I’ve got experience managing the university’s sinfonia orchestra, and am currently president of the comic and graphic novel society. I’ve also been the unit’s logistics lead since June this year, and have been responsible for maintaining and managing the university’s kit, so hopefully that speaks to my organisational skills, and shows that I do have experience within a unit management team.

I see this role not only as an opportunity for me to help you guys, and be able to provide you with the compassion and knowledge that I’ve built up over the last year, but also as an opportunity for me to develop. I have ambitions of one day being emergency ambulance crew, and I see this role as an opportunity for me to step up, to prove that I know what I’m doing and take a greater responsibility. Going for this role is not something I’ve taken lightly, as I wanted to make sure that I was right for the role and could effectively provide you all with the support you deserve, and I do truly hope I can be given the opportunity to do that.
