Hi everyone! I’m Rebecca. As you’ll probably know I’m a second-year maths student who has been LUUSAG’s treasurer for the past year and this year I’m applying to be LUUSAG’s president.
As a bit of background, I joined Girlguiding as a Brownie when I was 8 and I’m now a Rainbow leader with a unit back home. I’ve almost completed my Queen’s Guide Award which I will be finishing in May and as part of this I’ve planned and led several events for both young and adult members, coordinating the event teams to ensure they ran smoothly.
I’ve been a member of LUUSAG since I started university back in 2022 and have been an active and enthusiastic member of the society, having attended almost every social in that time. As the outgoing LUUSAG treasurer I’ve endeavoured to subsidise as many socials as possible to keep them affordable for members whilst also maintaining a healthy bank balance. This entailed planning a detailed budget and making decisions on expenditure when required.
You may be asking why I should be president so let me tell you. Through my role as treasurer, I’ve worked closely with the rest of committee to help run the society which has given me a strong understanding of it’s inner workings. In particular, as a member of the core committee, I have supported the completion and proof-reading of important society documents such as risk assessments and trip forms. As a result, I have seen first-hand the paperwork requirements that come as part of being president. Thanks to this pre-existing knowledge of what the role entails, I believe that I am well-prepared to take on the role of president. In addition, I’m an organised and reliable person, who has already shown that I can work well with the other elected members of the committee to host amazing socials. I’d love to build on this to lead the team and continue to ensure a long-lasting legacy for the society.
As president my aim would be to work with our SSAGO rep to help us maintain and build upon the relationships we have with the local Scouting district, in order to further cement our place in the local community. Vitally important also is to ensure we provide a warm welcome to our new cohort of freshers and that we continue to run a varied profile of events, bringing back some old favourites as well as trying out some new ideas based off the feedback of our members.
