The role of social sec is all about the fun side of the club. You are responsible for planning and running weekly socials on a Wednesday, posting them in time for everyone to prepare, organising freshers’ fun day, liaising with managers of pubs, bars, and clubs and, of course, Tour! Social sec is a yearlong commitment, meaning your work starts in summer up until the very end of your Tour.

Summer: Meet with the Revs manager and Mischief ticket man to get contracts prepared for the year ahead. Get in contact with HPP to make deals for the freshers’ fun day and pub club for the rest of the year. Start planning socials and what they’re going to look like at the beginning. Also, make sure you have your black card list for mischief and fruity sorted for the first week back (can’t have any committee member missing out on the best perk!).

Freshers’ week/semester 1: Running the freshers’ fun day and trying to recruit as many new members as possible along with pushing for sign-ups at the fresher’s fair. Your job is to get to know the freshers as best as possible, start learning their names and figure out their personalities. you are also responsible for getting the new members onto megalash and informing them of the upcoming socials and pub clubs. The first Otley run of the year is a big blow out to introduce everyone and break the ice, expect upwards of 90 people - plan the theme, games, and groups accordingly! Although the fresher admin is a lot, we can’t forget our old girls - the very first social of the year (in freshers’ week) will be an old girls social so take it as a practice run before the hordes of freshers arrive. As well as socials, you will have to begin your planning of Tour, getting an estimate of attendees, emailing companies, checking flight prices/buying them and getting quotes for stash… don’t forget tour bitch!!!!!

Second semester: You’ll be used to socials by now and finding them pretty easy to run. However, this is where Tour ramps up - you will have to assign everyone rooms, get the flights bought if not already, come up with nightly themes/costumes, get tour kit purchased (and tour names solidified), make sure there is loads to do on tour (clubs, beaches, fun days out etc) and keep on top of conveying all information to the tour attendees. Alongside socials and tour, you are responsible for getting varsity after party tickets for the club - making sure everyone and their mum can attend the biggest fruity of the year!! As much as you won’t want it to end, don’t forget to plan the final Otley and last social of the year :(

Summer: TOUR!!! It will finally have come around after a whole year of slaving away at excel sheets and google docs. This is your time to have fun, you will be running socials in the evening but in the daytime, tour families are responsible for their own enjoyment. They will all attend the days out and trips to various places around your chosen destination so you can sit back and enjoy the ride!

Obviously, we all know social sec is the silliest of roles but be prepared for buckets of admin consistently throughout the year. This year we have had 2 jam packed google docs, countless email/text chains and a huge tour spreadsheet - keeping all your ideas and preparation in one place on a shared document is important so you all can be up to speed with recent planning. People will also see you as a very present member of the club so don’t be shy in giving advice/ being an ear for someone to talk to.
