Due to the constant growth of the club, and the large influx of newbies needing development training, 3rd team co-ordinator is a massively important role. This role involves organising and attending development matches to give people their first taste of proper rugby and contact, which is essential in progressing people to get to playing standard. Therefore, organisation and communication with our coaches and the RFU development officers is essential - along with keeping exec and the rest of committee informed on what is planned.

The 3rd team co-ordinator will make strong contacts with other uni development teams and arrange fixtures both home and away as well as any other development events/festivals so good, timely communication is necessary and will involve a lot of texting and messaging especially early on in the season to establish connections. The co-ordinator needs to be approachable to all new members of the club, welcoming everyone and therefore will have a big presence at training, freshers’ fairs, and at least some socials to get to know the new freshies.

Whilst having a great knowledge of rugby isn’t essential, it will help to know the basics so you can help any freshers with questions they may have and help lead the team in the development fixtures. If you only started playing this year don’t be put off taking up this role, you’ll have the advantage of remembering what it felt like to start playing and all the rules and drills that helped you understand and become comfortable with the game.

The most important thing is for the 3rd team co-ordinator to be enthusiastic about rugby and committed to ensuring everyone feels comfortable on the pitch and enjoys themselves. This is a role that will take a fair bit of organisation and leadership but is massively rewarding. You get to see people progress and grow in confidence through the year.
