Hi! I'm Rowan and I'm running for the role of Welfare Secretary! Here's a little about me:

- 1st Year Electronics and Computer Engineering Student
- I love art, music, photography and F1!
- I was new to hiking when I joined the club this year

I am putting myself forward for this role as someone who cares about inclusivity and mental health on a personal level. Having suffered with my own mental health issues, I not only see the importance of creating a welcoming space, but can also relate to people in a way which may make me easier to talk to. I am also a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and would love to further the clubs image as the safe space for all that it is. I am familiar with speaking out to help others, in both personal and general matters, and am frequently someone my friends come to when they are struggling with a particular issue, or if they just need to talk. I would love to encourage more open conversation about mental health, harassment and inclusivity, as they are not taboo subjects and shouldn't be treated as such within our community either.

As Welfare Sec, I'd like to:

- Work with Social Sec to provide more events for Freshers and other new-comers to reduce nerves and intimidation when joining the club
- Advertise the club as an ally through merch, events and more!
- Continue previous Sec's work on creating an accessible, effective reporting system
- Introduce mindfulness events, such as social walks, crafting, games nights, and more
- Continue events with SASHA society (Students again sexual harassment and abuse), and potentially partner with SSAFE society (Suicide support and awareness for everyone) for more informative events

Hello! I'm Alex, I'll be running for Welfare Secretary this year (26/27) and I'm a 2nd year Biochemistry student.

I joined Hiking late October 2025 (Had I known Hiking had it's own society I would have joined sooner!) and since then I’ve met incredible people, explored some brilliant trails, and fallen over more times than I can count. Honestly, I fully intend to continue that tradition.

Growing up in the Peak District meant being surrounded by trails, forests, and hills that I couldn't not explore. Having that landscape as my backyard gave me a huge appreciation for the outdoors from a young age, the kind of appreciation that sticks with you no matter where you go. Long walks, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature became part of my normal, and it’s a big reason why hiking still feels like home to me today

I’m running for Welfare because I want to give something back to the society that’s given me muddy boots, great memories, and a surprising number of bruises.

As Welfare Secretary, I would:

Be an approachabe point of contact for the club

Handle welfare issues confidentially and responsibly

Support inclusivity and community building

This society has become one of the best parts of my uni life. I’ve made friends, climbed hills, frozen in the snow, and laughed the whole way. I’d love the chance to support the group in any way that I can.
