Hello, Film Society. I’m Conor, a second year Film and Photography student and I’m running for Secretary and Events. Film society means so much to me as a student in Leeds and I would dearly love to be part of the committee for the fantastic group. My tastes in film are in, but not limited to, British and Irish cinema and documentary films, and I would say my favourite filmmaker is Andrea Arnold hands down. I’m drawn specially to striking visuals and incredible acting. But most of all, I adore the communal experience of watching a film on the big screen with the soundtrack blasting and talking to like-minded people after the final fade out.
My intentions as secretary are clear.; continue on with the amazing organisation of previous committees and organising increasing membership participation in the choosing of films. I love the idea of each committed member choosing a film each week and introducing it, whether that be a classic, an understated work or even just a film you are curious about. I see this as a way of broadening the diversity of the screenings as well as creating an active participating community within the society. As Secretary, what I really want to do is make people want to go to the film soc every week, not just for the screenings, but the people, the chats and the laughs.
I have experience in organisational roles such as teaching English and in film production as well as being involved in other societies like theatre group and folk music.
Some more ideas I would bring forwards to the committee; creating a focus on documentary films, whether be a documentary week or even screening documentaries on the weekends for whomever wants to see them. It makes the most out of the cinema room and it’s more screenings for our members. Who’s with me? Lastly, I’ve loved the socials and events over the past two years and will continue with that. I would like also organise some field trips such as going to the cinema to see new releases as a group or even trips to film locations, BFI London, Paris and much more. Also, are we due a change of pub? No harm in a change of scenery.
