Hey everyone, I’m Adam Curness and I’m progressing to my 3rd year in Automotive Engineering. 2 years ago I was Events Manager for the society, organising TdY and founding e-TdY. This allowed me to become a key member of the committee while developing my teamwork and man management skills, putting me in good stead to become President this year.
Running for President allows me to give back to the society by continuing to instil the family feeling of the society ensuring future years also get to experience the unity of the society and can use that to help their personal development. For example, the society greatly helped me in combating social anxiety. I also hope to improve our online presence, increase alumni engagement and maintain our competitive BUKC standing. I will look to achieve these in the following ways:
• Endurance Tour de Yorkshire – A smaller, additional championship to TdY, taking place on Saturdays, allowing members that miss out on Wednesday’s races and alumni, to get involved. Also allows for members to experience a new racing format that helps instil teamwork and communication.
• Online socials – Improve utilisation of our discord platform to continue to hold events e.g., quizzes and game nights. This aids new members in getting comfortable within the society, as well as ensuring alumni and those on placements have a way of interacting with current society members, where previously they may have felt isolated. These will be additional to in person socials.
• BUKC and Driver Development - Maintain our large cohort of BUKC teams, including 2 mains teams. Introduce driver training, where senior drivers will go through video footage with newer drivers in order to aid their development.
The society has been on a steep upward trajectory for the past few years and I would be overjoyed to lead the committee in striving to keep moving forward and creating the best environment for our members to thrive in.
