Salaam!
My journey as an activist, a friend, and a staunch advocate for the Palestinian cause has led me to apply for President. I firmly believe that together, we can make a profound impact on preserving Palestine's rich culture as well as creating positive change.
Over the past few years, I have witnessed the strength and resilience of the Palestinian community. But there is still much work to be done. My experiences attending numerous protests, supporting charities, and raising awareness when at school, and university, have instilled in me the significance of unity and advocacy. As your President, I will strive to foster an environment where every Palestinian student and society member feels heard, valued, and empowered to contribute their voice to our cause.
Naom Chomsky's 'On Palestine' has deeply influenced my perspective, allowing me to better comprehend the complexities of Palestineβs history and the ongoing struggles faced by its people. Over the summer (when I am lucky enough to be going on holiday to Jordan!) I am planning to read 'The Hundred Years War on Palestine,' which will further enhance my understanding. Furthermore, as a literature student, I value the impact of books as a force for change, and thus have also appreciated many books from the Palestinian diaspora- I would greatly recommend 'The Beauty of Your Face,' which is one of my favourite books ever.
I have attended many rallies and protests, mainly in Manchester which is my home city. One of the most significant and raw moments in my fight for the Palestinian struggle was in May 2021 when I made a large sign listing the names of the children who had been killed in Palestine that month. As I was at the front of the protest, one of the leaders saw it and asked if they could read the names and ages to the thousands of protesters in Piccadilly Gardens to pay respect to children. I said yes and it was a truly heart-breaking moment of reflection, yet utterly necessary. I would say that it was that moment which propelled me to want to do more than just support the cause, but also help lead it.
My dedication to Palestine goes beyond mere activism. I have cherished friendships with many Palestinian students, and their stories, dreams, and aspirations have become an inseparable part of my own journey. Their experiences have illuminated the beauty and resilience of Palestinian culture, which we must strive to preserve and share proudly with the world.
As President of the Palestinian Society, I pledge to:
1. Amplify Palestinian Voices.
I will work tirelessly to create platforms where our voices can be heard on campus and beyond. Together, we will organise engaging events, discussions, and cultural showcases to spread awareness and foster a deeper understanding of Palestine's heritage.
2. Advocate for Justice.
I will continue to participate in and organise peaceful protests to raise awareness of the Palestinian cause, shedding light on the human rights issues faced by the people of Palestine. Through constructive dialogue with the university administration and other student societies, we will seek avenues to effect change and support Palestinian rights.
3. Strengthen the Palestinian Community.
Our community's strength lies in unity. I will encourage collaboration with other societies, forging alliances with those who share our values and concerns. Together, we can build bridges and amplify our impact.
4. Fundraise for Charities.
Recognising the importance of charitable work for Palestine, I will actively organise fundraisers to support organisations that provide aid and assistance to Palestinians.
5. Empower Future Leaders.
I am committed to nurturing the future Palestinian leaders. By organizing workshops, mentorship programs, and skill-building sessions, we will empower our students to make lasting impacts on the global stage.
Regardless of whether I am successful in this role or not, I will be relentless in my pursuit of justice, equity, and empowerment for all Palestinians and be an avid member of this society.
Together, we can make a difference, leaving a legacy of hope and progress for Palestine.
Thank you for considering me as your President of the Palestinian Society.
With heartfelt determination,
Safiyah
