Hi everyone, I’m Kate Morley, a (soon to be) 4th Year Geography student. I’m useless at Canva so please read this statement as to why I’d love to be elected President of SFGH Leeds for next year!

I’d love to be President of SFGH Leeds next year for 3 main reasons:

1) I’m hugely passionate about this society and the opportunity it brings to connect like-minded students! I’ve been involved with SFGH for 2 years now, and last year I was Charity Coordinator on committee. I also attended the London National Conference in January this year, which was amazing!! I really loved the opportunity to meet other students across the network and hear from great speakers. I’ve recently been elected Policy and Advocacy Director on the SFGH National Committee, so I’d love to organise more workshops and events (maybe even a National Conference!) in Leeds next year to connect students from all backgrounds with Global Health!

2) I’m experienced! I’ve spent the last 9 months of my industrial placement year at Pfizer UK in their super small Global Health and Social Impact team. I am absolutely loving my time here, and it’s really showed me how Global Health works in the private healthcare sector! I collaborate daily with Patient Advocacy, Policy teams, and external stakeholders - experience that will be essential to being a great President of SFGH Leeds! I also work with current SFGH National Committee on SFGH’s Global Health Grind - a GH podcast featuring expert guests - this will be coming soon! Alongside these core experiences, I’m a regular volunteer for patient advocacy and inclusion organisations, and I have previously been the Social Secretary of the Leeds Geography Society - I have 2 years’ committee experience!

3) I can make SFGH Leeds more inclusive! Unfortunately, the narrative that SFGH is a society for medical students still prevails - I want to change this. For the last 2 years, we’ve missed Freshers Fairs, which are one of the best chances to get students, who may have never heard of SFGH, involved. I personally only found out about SFGH when wandering through the Worsley building! As a Geography student myself, I feel really passionate about making SFGH inclusive to all degrees and backgrounds as we each bring different perspectives! If I were elected President, I’d work from Day 1 to ensure greater reach of subjects within our society, and provide more opportunities for us to connect with like-minded students.

If I were elected President, I’d leverage my National Committee position, to create advocacy workshops, Global Health issue briefings to increase knowledge within the community, and student networking events so we all get the most out of our memberships!

I am impact-driven, committed and ambitious, and I’d value immensely the opportunity to represent Students for Global Health Leeds as President from 2024/2025. I bring experience, passion, and ambition to this role, along with an excitement to see how much we can achieve to advance global health equity and reduce healthcare disparities worldwide.
