As a student who has been involved in both academic and industrial settings, I have a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities that students face as they navigate their career paths. Throughout my academic journey, I have been fortunate to participate in various research projects, internships, and industry-related events. These experiences have not only equipped me with the knowledge and skills required for success but also allowed me to develop a network of professionals that I can leverage to support my fellow students. I believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential components of a thriving academic and industrial community. I will work tirelessly to ensure that all students, regardless of their backgrounds or identities, feel included and supported throughout their academic and professional journeys. Hey, I am Suhani, a first-year international student from Delhi, India studying Economics and Finance. Since I first came across WILS, I’ve been fascinated by the work they do, how they actively empower and strengthen women and how they’re making a difference for women belonging to diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, countries and cultures. A platform has been created for all of us to come together and take charge as leaders. I want to be a part of such a vibrant community and put in efforts to further their success and achievements. In my work experience, I have gained skills required to collaborate with other departments and maintain good relationships with firms of various kinds.
I am passionate about creating more opportunities for women to break through barriers and succeed in their chosen fields. I believe that creating a more equitable and inclusive academic environment is critical to advancing the careers of women in academia. As a first year myself, I understand the struggles faced by students while searching for a job in their desired sector. Therefore, I will give my best to come up with innovative ideas for career events so that they are provided with exciting opportunities. If elected as the Academic and Industrial Representative, I will work towards creating an inclusive environment, organise events relevant for the careers of business and law students and cater to their needs by understanding them. Some more examples of what I would aim to achieve in this position are:
o Promotion of gender diversity and inclusivity in academic and industrial settings, including leadership positions and workplace culture.
o Formation of amiable relationships with fellow members, faculty and business and law firms. Engage with stakeholders, policymakers and community organisations, to gather support for gender diversity and equity.
o Regular reporting to the President and other committee members regarding my activities and advancements.
o Advocating for policies and initiatives that encourage women in leadership positions, such as mentoring programs and networking opportunities.
o Providing mentorship and support to women in academia and industry, meanwhile helping them navigate the challenges of leadership and advancing their careers.
If given the position, I will work to the best of my abilities to achieve the afore-mentioned goals and more. My experience, skills and network would be used to help advance the careers of young women in both academia and industry. Thank you for taking the time to read my statement. Hi my name is Shiza and I am a first year international student from Ireland :)
I would be honoured to be a part of the amazing WILS committee as the Academic and Industrial Representative for 2023/2024. The way the committee have ran their events and worked together over the past year has been so inspiring and has lead me to apply :)
I believe in creativity, authenticity and working together in a collaborative healthy environment, not only during the duration of university career, but also after.
As a current member of this society, I am hoping to make my way onto committee and plan activities that serve the interests and requirements of students pursuing both law and business degrees. As your Academic and Industrial Representative, I will establish and preserve connections of the society with companies and businesses, law firms, and barrister chambers in order to advocate for women leadership and diversity.
By having the opportunity to chair the student council in my school for 4 years, I hope to utilise my experience to help create and lead programs within the law and business faculties, to support women in the society to further their careers in their respective fields. I believe this role requires the candidate to be able to articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively, listen actively to other perspectives, and to engage in constrictive dialogue with a wide range of stakeholders; and I believe I can do this effectively. As the founder of the Human Rights society at my school, I really understand the positive impact diversity and inclusion can make, and hope to implement that if I get the opportunity on the committee :)
