Adrian Zahir
Hi everyone, I’m Adrian, a Computer Science student currently on a placement year with PwC and heading into my final year. I support McLaren in Formula 1 (you should vote for me out of pity) and I’m a huge fan of Top Gear so don’t be surprised if you catch me indulging in Elliott’s references. I love watching all forms of motorsport - I had a blast at the Ripon Rally this year and I will also be attending the 24 hours of Spa this summer! -------------------- I have been active in the society ever since my first year (spending 8 hours in Ed’s Volvo on the way to Whilton Mill was a great way to start) and was the events manager last year. Unfortunately I have not been around as much as I would have liked to this year due to work commitments so have not had the chance to meet a lot of you yet. Nevertheless, I always attend events when I can. It has been astonishing to see so many people at the F1 viewings and I have loved competing in the BUKC. It has simply been amazing to see what this year's committee is doing for us all. --------------------
If elected, I would like to focus on these 5 key areas to enhance what we do as a society:
1️⃣ Dedicated motorsport careers advice and support from the society. As the society has matured, a lot of our members and alumni have had placements or graduate jobs in the motorsport industry. I would like to harness their experience, as well as the university’s employability team, to help members forge their own career in motorsport whether it’s graphic design, engineering or anything else! We will provide forums to ask questions, find out about opportunities, signpost useful events and invite representatives from companies to give talks.
--------------------
2️⃣ I would like to strengthen the digital presence of the society to offer a better membership experience and enable people to follow our competitive teams more closely. This would include an online portal where people can track the results of the TdY and BUKC and see a summary of their performance.
--------------------
Moreover, I would like us to create engaging video content such as round reviews of TdY and BUKC to showcase our involvement in different events and competitions. This would provide people who cannot attend an opportunity to support their teams and stay informed about events. We could even use our large following to attract sponsorship and make events even cheaper!
--------------------
3️⃣ More trips to motorsports events nationally and locally to offer members a diverse range of experiences. As events manager, I introduced trips to non-karting events such as BTCC which went down well and we attended three rounds that year. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip to the Ripon Rally this year put on by Joe. Moving forward, I would like to attend more BTCC rounds and British GT races as well as some more local events such as the ‘Cock O’ the North’ motorbike race in Scarborough. By broadening our range of events, we can provide exciting opportunities for everyone to explore and enjoy the world of motorsports.
--------------------
4️⃣ Continue the society’s efforts to make motorsports a welcoming environment for all, regardless of gender or race. We have run women’s only karting events and brought in successful female racing drivers for talks previously. Events like this where we bring in role models and provide different environments have worked welI but I would also like to collaborate with the girls on track initiative to maximise our efforts in increasing both karting and non karting participation.
--------------------
5️⃣ Evolve the Yorkshire Endurance Championship, potentially competing against other universities, going to different tracks and mixing up the championship format. I have thoroughly enjoyed YEC this year - the new format and chance to team up with other people has been great.
--------------------
This is all above and beyond trying to put on as many affordable events as possible and keeping the same community feeling we have in the society. The member retention this year has been great and it would be amazing to keep that up. I’d also love to see our BUKC teams continue to succeed, get even more people involved, and accelerate the development of our current drivers.
--------------------
Why me?
I have always stayed involved in society affairs, both when I have been on and off committee, so I understand what is required for the society to function and succeed. During my year as events manager, we held the most society events, had the highest number of members and TdY participants up to that point. To top it all off, we won the Riley award for the best GIAG! One of the highlights of my year on committee was seeing so many people enjoy our give it a go and experience what the society has to offer. I'm incredibly proud of the fact that a lot of those people became regulars at our events throughout the year and some even went on to committee.
--------------------
Being part of the society has been the highlight of my university experience and I am grateful for it bringing me out of my shell as I am a naturally shy person. I’d love to have the chance to repay that favour and keep up the amazing community which this society provides.
--------------------
During my placement year, I have worked hard and led teams to deliver successfully even when hit with adversity. I am always one step ahead of things, have an eye for detail and love helping others improve. I have developed the skills required to enable the committee to have the freedom and resources available to make your experience in the society incredible. It would also be a great opportunity to challenge myself in a different environment where there are other external factors to account for such as changing prices and requirements from the union.
--------------------
Not only do I have the skills to drive the society forwards, I am ready to do what it takes to make this the best year the society has ever seen.

Adam Curness
Hey everyone, I am Adam Curness and I am progressing to my 4th year in Automotive Engineering. I’m applying for President to give back to the society by ensuring others experience the family feel I have had, allowing others to reap the benefits of having a support network of likeminded people who love the smell of burning rubber.
I think I’d be suitable because:
• President – I have previously been President for the 22/23 academic year, overseeing one of the most successful years in the society’s history with unprecedented numbers of karting events and record event attendances. This previous experience will allow a smooth transition into next year’s committee and allows us to build on the foundations built next year.
• Teamwork – Being in the BUKC mains teams for the last 4 years enabled me to learn the value of teamwork both on and off track from the elder statesmen (not naming names), allowing me to develop teamworking and communication skills which will aid me in making the best decisions to further develop the society. Coming to inters days also allowed me to give advice to drivers and help the Captain/Vice-Captain, showing good man management skills.
• Events Manager – Here I organised TdY rounds, founded e-TdY and became a proactive committee member for the 20/21 academic year. This allowed me to prove my organisational skills which would become a key element of becoming a further part of committee.
My ideas for next year are:
• Continue with a high volume of karting events, ensuring they are better spread throughout the year (including bringing forward the first round of YEC to introduce this championship earlier to new members). This also allows for greater alumni engagement as events will be better spread throughout the year, with the aim of ensuring more alumni will be free to come to some events.
• Maintain our large cohort of BUKC teams, including 2 mains teams and 4 inters teams.
• Introduce driver training, where senior drivers will go through video footage with newer drivers in order to aid their development. This will include the purchase of society go-pros to use at TdY, YEC and BUKC events with the aim of finding where our drivers can improve their craft.
• Improve the society’s use of organisational apps that will allow us to keep a better track of who is assigned what tasks and when they need to be completed by.
Additionally I’d love to include games surrounding F1. For example, everyone having to predict the qualifying and finishing positions of both drivers in a random team, with a reward at the end of the year.
• Aim to provide a monthly newsletter to members that provides them with all the details of events that are taking place in the coming weeks.
• Use our large discord platform to continue to hold events e.g., quizzes and game nights. This aids new members in getting comfortable within the society, as well as ensuring alumni and those on placements have a way of interacting with current society members, where previously they may have felt isolated.
• Continuing to instil the family feeling of the society to ensure future years also get to experience the unity of the society and can use that to help their personal development. For example, the society greatly helped me in combating social anxiety.
Overall, the society has been on a steep upward trajectory for the past few years and I would be overjoyed to lead the committee in striving to keep moving forward and creating the best environment for our members to thrive in.
