As treasurer I intend to optimise our resources to add maximum value to everyone’s society experience. I am really excited for this opportunity if elected; I wholeheartedly enjoyed my time on committee as vice-president previously, and l would love the chance to take on more responsibility in a key role on the new year’s committee.
Treasurer is a role which lends itself to organisation, longer-term planning and of course spreadsheets! Guys, that’s my whole thing!
My biggest aim is to try to ensure everyone can go to the events they want to and not have to miss out. We have had huge growth in the society in the last 2 years, basically tripling in size of our ‘regulars’ and with this our TdY events are frequently selling out in just hours which is wonderful, but also inevitably leaving some left out. I want to allocate some of our money to ensure our TdY events can be bigger enabling everyone who wants to get a ticket can, but while still maintaining our subsidies to keep the tickets to karting events as cheap as absolutely possible.
I want to ensure we have an amount of leeway too, some reserve, for future ideas we come up with throughout the year - so we are not pigeon-holed into what we can and can’t do ahead of time, such as an impromptu BUKC barbeque we had a few weeks ago!
Leeds motorsport society has been recognised from within and without (through multiple awards in consecutive years woo!) for the excellent atmosphere and community feel of the society, extending to many areas off the karting track, and these aspects have been some of the areas I have most enjoyed in the four years I have been here. Also, for many years now there are our women in motorsport events, presentations and collaborations. These have been a great success and I feel the society should absolutely double-down on stuff like this. I would push for it also and set aside funds specifically for it.
I have been an active member of the society since the very start of first year, I remember getting a leaflet in my halls with a list of all the societies and realising ‘Oh my God there’s a motorsport society in Leeds!’ Since then, I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience in the society it has definitely been my favourite aspect of university so far and I’ve really missed it while being hundreds of miles away on placement this year.
In my previous role as Vice-president, I have contributed in a variety of areas, including my magnificent automated TdY Points Spreadsheet of Destiny, negotiating with Walkabout to get us free beer – then getting that beer upgraded from Carling to Heineken – very important! as well as later getting us a deal with them to earn commission from our fantastic F1 events, giving us more funds to spend on our society.
As for what I want to get out of this myself, I am looking for the opportunity to learn and to take on more responsibilities, and improve myself especially in regards to my confidence and conviction, and being elected would be a great chance to practice this skill and make decisions – I really feel I would get a lot out of this kind of position.
So, to summarise, if elected I would aim add maximum value and inclusivity to everyone’s year on and off track Leeds Motorsport experience, and try to double down on the great ‘community’ feel we currently have.

Hi, I’m Thomas, a first-year studying Aeronautical and Aerospace engineering. I’ve attended the majority of motorsport society events I could this year. They’ve been some of the most enjoyable times at university, even if I do crash a lot in TDY. I even met my closest friend at uni at the welcome drinks right at the start of term and have made many great friendships that I wouldn’t have had without the society. I’m running for treasurer as I have a good head for maths and want to help the society run next year so that people will have the same opportunities I did to join such a great group. I would do everything I could to ensure that society members get the most enjoyment for their money, making the society as affordable as possible and generally helping it run smoothly and efficiently. I am both a member of the LGBTQ+ community and neurodivergent, if elected I would work with the rest of the committe to ensure the society keeps being inclusive and welcoming to everyone as I experienced this year.
