Hey gurls,
As you all know, I’m currently social sec on this year’s committee (alongside Mimi). I came into this role completely blind, and other than coordinating nights out with friends at home (which is hard enough in itself), I had never organised anything comparable to a Uni scale social.
At times in the first semester, it certainly felt like the blind leading the blind, a prime example of this is being: before the first social was even organised, Mimi and I both forgot we were supposed to be on a Teams call with the mischief man (kn*b), to sort tickets and black cards for the committee. I was three sheets to the wind in a beer garden at home, and she was concerningly trolleyed somewhere in Italy. I still can’t recall a word of that conversation, but the key point being, we still we somehow managed to sort all our tickets and get black cards for the whole committee. What I’m trying to say is, we’ve gone from a shambolic unorganised mess, to two girlies who have organised a ball for double the number of usual members, hit our revs target of £2000 (ofc with all of your help), and organised quite literally some of the most chaotic socials Leeds Uni has ever seen. #slay
As a social sec this year (along with Mimi’s help ofc) I have made timetables, spreadsheets and word documents galore, all with the purpose of making sure our socials were unreal, had good themes, the right number of tickets and cracking pres. I’ve practically lived in revs, and seen a mischief night out more than my parents this year. We’ve branched out into the realm of joint socials #spooky, and have made lots of valuable connections with other societies, which will obviously be utilised next year.
Most importantly of all, we’ve had the responsibility of sorting the annual tramp ball. Although at times the ball felt like it was sending me into an early grave, this process has massively increased my organisational and communication skills. Mimi and I have managed to coordinate 50 people’s meal choices, seating preferences and location choices all for an INSANELY good price #accountant #thankutom.
Next year, me and my new grey hairs plan to branch out to different club nights, mischief is naturally a sports staple but can get a bit tedious sometimes, so I’m hoping to get the committee fresh2death cards, meaning Bobby’s Disco, Old Red, Belgrave and Headrow nights should be expecting an influx of 2024/25 tramps. I would also like to carry on with the joint socials, potentially swapping training with gymnastics and vice versa. With the growth of the club and its members, this opens up the floor to organise bigger socials; pub golf, scavenger hunts, and sports days. To accommodate for our sober queens, more wine glass painting, tote bag painting, games nights and clay modelling will be in the works. And for the members who are just game for a social, and less of the actual sport, a social membership may be a good thing to introduce.
I love this role, luv luv luv trampin and love a social – do I really need to say any more. #convinced
