Hi everyone, I’m Annie and I am running to be this year’s GenCom. I’m a third-year computer science student on placement and currently the president and prior web secretary on committee. I’ve also recently signed up for the Mountain Leader qualification which I hope to achieve in the next couple of years.

I joined the club in 2023, pretty much since I started university, with very little hiking experience. In the last three years I’ve gone from being scared of hiking up Snowdon to start learning how to lead on our winter hikes. I may still be slightly scared of heights but it’s crazy to look back on how much I’ve done in the last few years. Hiking trips are the things that keep me going through long days sitting in front of a computer and this club has allowed me to not only experience the best hiking the UK has to offer but has also equipped me with the skills to go out myself and be safe on the hills.

I’ve also now been on committee for 2 years, becoming web sec in my first year and president in my second. Through this time I’ve gained a pretty good understanding of how the club runs and hope to be helpful next year through passing on my niche knowledge about the joys of crampon sharpening and running leader training sessions.

I’m hoping that being GenCom will give me a bit more time to help implement some of the ideas I had this year but didn’t manage to get done. My main goal is to make our leading process a bit more clear to help encourage more new members to become leaders as well as encouraging more people to become winter leaders. I’d also like to start a blog section on the website where members or leaders can write about their experiences hiking and help newer members know what to expect when coming on our trips. Finally I have some ideas for further collabs and socials we could run such as making rainbow beaded laces with LGBTQ+ society or running a kit mending session.
