This committee member will act as a voice for our international members and will be able to raise international exclusive issues alongside supporting inclusion and diversity within the club.

Each semester, new international students arrive at the university, and the society is always looking to bring hiking to as many people as possible. For many, hiking can be a new concept, and part of the role will be helping them settle into the club. This typically involves speaking to people — including international members and those new to hiking — during Welcome Week, at pub socials, and on hikes. The goal is to ensure people feel welcomed and know what to expect for their first few hikes or weekend trips. Therefore, approachability and attentiveness are important attributes for this role. If you can remember people’s names after speaking to them once, then this is the perfect role for you!

You will also be responsible for handling a range of international student-specific problems. The following are some tasks you may work on as part of this role.

- Developing an international members’ handbook for those who are new to the country and to hiking in general. For example, creating a glossary of hiking-specific terms that people who have hiked in other countries may not be familiar with

- Helping students find kit to use in the UK

- Conducting surveys about international student experiences in the club

- Updating our visa guidance document and helping members with visas for international trips — this will be explained to you, so no worries if you don’t have prior experience

Alongside this, you will also have a role in planning and running an international-themed social, whether that be a collaboration with a cultural society or a potluck.

This is a relatively new role in the society, so you will have the freedom to expand on the role and brainstorm new ways to make hiking more accessible and inclusive.

You do not need to be an international student yourself to apply.
