Hi UOLWCC, hope everyone is enjoying the spring sunshine (I know I’m dying for a drink in |T| right now). My name’s Zoe and I’m excited to say that I’m running for netball sec!!
Firstly, here’s a few things you should know about me. I am in Year 1 doing Mechanical engineering, but when I’m not crying over lab reports I’m thinking about the next women’s cricket event that going to get me through the week. From when I was little, I remember my dad being completely cricket obsessed, fortunately his love for cricket and sport was passed onto me. Hence, when I started uni, I had to see what the fuss with women’s cricket was about.
While I may not be the best cricketer, I found my love of sport though netball. I have been playing netball since first school and been involved in all aspects of it. As well than playing, I have supported coaching my home club’s junior netball team and have earned my netball umpiring qualification. Now, every week I look forward to playing netball as part of the UOLWCC team.
If I were to be elected to be netball sec here’s a few things I would like to achieve:
- Firstly, I want to encourage more people to get involved in the netball team, especially next year’s new freshers. Some ways I could do this would be hosting a coffee social so freshers can get to know the team or a short give it a go session at the edge.
- Next, I would like to consider introducing some informal regular training session (e.g. every other week). I think this would be a great way to help conquer the uni intramural league and bring the cricket netball team more together.
- Finally, I wish to look into the possibility of getting some affordable netball kit, to give us our own identity.
I will be great for this role as I have experience in all aspects of netball, from playing to coaching and umpiring. I will be friendly and approachable, and welcoming to new members who just want to get involved. I am committed and reliable and will ensure that the netball team has a successful and enjoyable year- and beat men’s cricket in the yearly Movember charity match!
Overall, I want the UOLWCC netball to be fun and inclusive for all members of women cricket, and while I can be competitive in matches, I recognise that netball is a great way for everyone to get involved with sport and have some laughs along the way.

Hey guys! My name's Ruby and I'm really excited to say I'm running to be your netball sec next year! I hope you've all had a lovely Easter break and haven't missed cricket too much (I definitely have).

If you don’t know me, I'm a second year fresher who has changed her course twice, so after being both a biology and sociology student next year I will call myself a law student (secretly I think I'm just trying to extend my university experience for as long as possible). I grew up around cricket so I decided to join this year on my own, which was terrifying but, I turned up to Dry Dock in full dog attire and immediately felt so welcomed by all the lovely girls at UOLWCC. Since then, I've met some of my closet friends at university and was lucky enough to go on tour with them this break where I also got to know more members. Cricket has genuinely changed my experience for the better I cant believe I missed out on it last year!

I've especially loved being involved in the social netball team. I didn’t just grow up around cricket, netball has always been a big part of my life too. I actually trialled for netball last year and failed miserably, so joining cricket and realising there was still a chance to play netball but in a fun more relaxed way meant I could keep doing something I love without the pressure. That’s something I'd love more girls to experience because it's also another way to get more involved in UOLWCC and who wouldn’t want that?!?!?

If elected, my main aim would be to get as many people signed up as possible both freshers and old girls to really grow social netball. I also plan to get a netball kit whether that’s dresses, tops or bibs which will be worn at the weekly training sessions I plan to run so everyone can get to know each other and win the social league 🙏

I think I'd be a good fit for this role as I was both a netball coach and team captain in sixth form, so I've developed skills in organisation, communication and leadership. I know how to run sessions, support players and create a positive environment.

I would also love to continue the infamous Movember charity tournament, as well as work with the charity and welfare sec to organise more charity matches throughout the year. There are a few causes close to me that I'd love us to support such as Cancer Research UK, Mind and Women's Aid. It's a great way to bring everyone together and mix with other societies 💚

Overall, I would love to give back to a society that has had such an impact on my university experience and to follow on from Eims who has been so welcoming and has done an amazing job this year.
