We have two ideas for you to vote on in a campus wide referendum;
- Should LUU Support UCU Strike Action?
- Should the University change external cafes and outlets on campus to be student led and run by LUU?
Why is there a referendum?
LUU hosts three sets of Better Forums each year where students are able to put forward their ideas about how to make LUU, the University or Leeds better. A randomly selected panel votes on the ideas, and if 75% or more vote ‘Yes’ it becomes LUU Policy for three years. If the panel cannot reach a clear majority, the idea goes to a student-wide referendum: that’s where you come in!
You can learn more about the Better Forums and see all Current Policy here.
What do I need to do?
A referendum needs at least 1,500 votes to be valid [quorate] and a simple majority (50% +1 vote) to pass, so the simplest way you can be involved is by having your say with a vote. You’ll be able to answer ‘Yes’, ‘No’ or ‘Abstain’. Abstaining counts towards quoracy, but tells us that either you couldn’t make a decision either way or didn’t find either argument persuasive enough to decide.
We are also looking for students who would be interested in being involved in the 'Yes' or 'No' campaign for either idea. You will be provided with support from our Political Engagement Team (including training and resources). If you're interested then please contact LUU.PET@leeds.ac.uk
How does it work?
You’ll be able to answer ‘Yes’, ‘No’ or ‘Abstain’. Abstaining counts towards the quorum, but tells us that either you couldn’t make a decision either way or didn’t find either argument persuasive enough to decide. You can find out more about each idea and the Yes/No arguments on their individual pages.
