My name is Rose Francis and I am a 3rd year medical student. I am interested in joining the committee this year as I am passionate about pursuing a surgical career and interacting with students and clinicians with similar interests.
I have been involved in several Cutting Edge events over the past two years and would like to take this opportunity to get more involved in the society. I have had previous experience of organising events with Teddy Bear Hospital for example organising their annual Teddy picnic as well as working with Restart a Heart to run their large scale event which involves teaching members of the public CPR across two days. Both these events proved very successful and have received good turnout and I hope to organise and work to do the same for Cutting Edge. I also really enjoy teaching and have been a tutor for the past two years and would love to take my teaching skills further by helping to deliver the highly regarded suturing series. I hope that with my knowledge and skill set I could take the event further to a regional level and help other budding surgeons develop the skills and techniques required to build a competitive surgical portfolio.
I would also love to work with the conference director to include more skills based workshops at the regular conferences and ensure they are accessible to everyone. Thank you for reading my nomination and I would be very grateful of your vote.

Hi everyone! My name is Olivia, a 3rd-year medical student who’s interested in pursuing a career in surgery and would like to join the cutting-edge committee this year as the Skills and Educator Coordinator and be more involved in the society.

I believe I have the necessary skills to fulfil the role having previously organised and coordinated charity events at my local pharmacy, such as creating food and well-being packages for the elderly. This experience taught me the importance of effective planning, communication and teamwork skills to be able to create a successful event, such as the suturing series and surgical conferences.

I am passionate about studying and hope to bring my skills and experience to Cutting Edge and work alongside the current Skills and Educator Coordinator to organise events to increase student’s experience in the surgical field which everyone in the society can enjoy and learn from. Last year, I volunteered to be a patient in the Cutting-Edge 3rd year OSCE where I saw how helpful it is for students to make sure they feel confident for exams. I would love to be able to coordinate similar events, that are accessible to everyone whilst being dedicated to making a positive impact in Cutting Edge.

Hello everyone! My name is Linley, currently I’m in my 4th year. I have a budding interest in surgery after having attended several local and national conferences last year in the UK, one of which was the Surgical Careers Conference by Cutting Edge last December. I found it to be an incredibly insightful experience as there were opportunities to pick the brains of different surgeons from diverse fields through the “surgical speed dating” workshop. Back in Malaysia, I had the privilege of serving as a peer tutor in the clinical skills department. In this role, I conducted OSCE sessions and taught clinical skills to Year 1 and Year 2 medical students. Given that previous experience, I’m keen on leveraging my teaching skills to organize more OSCE sessions for clinical students as well as introducing clinical skills to pre-clinical students in Leeds. Additionally, I took the lead as the Events Executive for MMI UK, where I spearheaded the clinical mentoring scheme which involved delegating tasks to my team members and liaising with regional directors, alumni and junior doctors to recruit mentors and mentees. This experience greatly honed my event organization and leadership abilities. Currently, I hold the position of Regional Lead for NSTS (National Surgical Teaching Society), where I promote and share educational initiatives of NSTS to medical students. I think this would serve as a great opportunity to not only increase exposure of our members to additional surgical information but also for future collaborative efforts between CuttingEdge and NSTS to execute educational initiatives such as teaching series or webinars, elevating the education and skills development offerings of CuttingEdge. This would effectively expand our reach and recognition, generating increased support for our events and annual conference. All in all, I hope to contribute my ideas and utilize my event organization skills by joining the CuttingEdge committee as the Skills and Education Coordinator to grow both personally and professionally.
