Hello, welcome to my candidate statement! So happy you stopped by.
My name is Sophie Williams and I have decided to run for Engsoc’s Publicity Sec for the coming
year. I’m currently a first year English Language and Literature student, and am really enjoying
the course so far, as well as the crazy whimsical campus, city and bunnies. Despite a generally
good start to university, I’ve found both semesters surprisingly difficult, but one thing that has
reassured me time and time again is the Engsoc community. I’ve been a regular at English tea
since week one, and have met some brilliant friends whom I am grateful for each day. Through
making incredible, like-minded friends, I’ve been inspired in my studies, read books that I never
would have, and become a helper at our university printing press! Without this weekly event,
including the wonderful and friendly committee, I wouldn’t be the same person today! I’d love to
be on the team that produces this magic, and hopefully bring a smile to your day too!
Since the day I found out what an email was, I’ve unironically loved crafting them (and sending
them, apologies to my previous teachers). In group projects, I’ve happily accepted the role of
the organiser – I communicate, work out timings and reflect. Now, having been in the routine of
receiving an Engsoc email every week, I’m excited by the impact that my emails could have –
I’ve witnessed the amazing ability of Erin’s society emails to uplift, and I want in! As a result of
these emails, I’ve kept myself and my friends up to date on socials that we could attend,
consumed some glorious home-bakes, and played in a netball match (apologies girls x) – I’ve
loved every opportunity and every conversation! I’d love to be your next source of information,
hopefully including some consented photos to really show off what we’re capable of together.
This year, so far, I’ve taken enormous steps of learning in my mental health journey. I’ve realised
the importance of supporting yourself before pushing yourself, and reaching out, even when it
feels pointless, or feels like “just a phase”. This term, I’m taking this journey one step further,
and have been recently elected Wellbeing Sec for the Pantomime society. I have strong
ambitions to carry this passion over to Engsoc in the form of publicity. I know that the
committee team will once again provide a safe community, of which I was so very grateful for
this year, and I know that I will work hard to be involved and encouraging in your society events
and emails
