MANIFESTO FOR ENGLISH SPORTS SECRETARY 2026


Hi everyone! My name is Brooke and it would be my honour to be your new sports secretary on the panel for English Society! I am a first year English Language and Linguistics student at the University of Leeds and I am running for sports secretary because this society as it has really made my first year experience being a part of it, and I want to give others the same sense of belonging that I have had this year. Meeting everyone within this community has helped me to create life long friends as well as boosting my confidence, often taking away the stress from my course and most of all having so much fun!

I have been an active part of this society throughout the whole year by attending weekly matches, training whenever I could and of course attending many socials. Each of these activities helped me to develop friendships and skills, which is what I wish to achieve within this role for new coming society members, as well as returning members. Netball has been a part of my life since the age of 6, through both club and school, and carrying on this sport has majorly helped me settle into university. I want to create a safe space for people of all abilities to feel comfortable within the society both on and off the court!

One key reason I would be suited for this role is my leadership skills. For my club back at home, I captained our team for 7 years, leading us to many victories within the league and through tournaments, making us a leading club within our league. I am eager to continue this victory into the social league to bring us promotion! I also have brilliant organisational skills, key for organising training sessions, socials and matches.

To recruit new members, I would actively promote our society on social media platforms, such as Instagram and TikTok, to continue a growth in our society. I am inspired by Annie and Olivia to continue to push for more players to help those struggling with stress or anxiety when it comes to joining university. Meeting new people is a huge part of this society which is why I want to promote our society. The GIAG session at the start of the academic year will be a major way to help maintain new members. The GIAG session will be a great way to show newcomers how entertaining and rewarding the English Netball Society is, which is why I would plan an extremely engaging session full of returning members to help build connections with new joiners so our society can flourish to its full potential.

This society isn’t just about playing netball, it’s also about creating strong friendships, as mentioned numerous times. Through this society, I have met 3 of my closest friends and I want to create a place for people to find this for themselves. I plan to maintain our Bobby’s socials, as these are always a hit without society members, with fun fancy dress themes to unite all members. I would also love to implicate sober socials, such as a trampoline park social or picnic in Hyde Park, so that even people who don’t enjoy drinking can participate in strengthening our team bond which can be translated onto the court. I would also love to plan an Otley Run in the second semester to unite us further and create even more fun when university starts to feel a bit more serious!

Most of all, I plan to maintain the safe and friendly environment created within the English Netball Society. Breaking away from the pressures of university can be a crucial thing for many students which is why I hope to preserve the fun and inclusive atmosphere we already have! I am excited for the opportunity to contribute to people’s university experience and as English Sports Secretary, I am confident I can continue to make our society thrive and grow.

I have been playing netball for as long as I can remember and would be honoured to take part in a higher role!

My name is Eve Bill, and I am a first year student studying English language and linguistics. I would love to become the sports secretary next year because to me, netball is all about having fun no matter the outcome, and no matter the ability of the team. Netball is a great way to create friendships, and many of my closest friends at uni have been made through the English netball team. I would love to be able to help the upcoming freshers create solid friendships just like I did, as well as consolidating current relationships through practicing teamwork and off-the-court meet ups. Netball has always been important to me, as sports secretary I would organise charity matches, lead training sessions and plan fun socials both nights out and sober socials, depending on what the team would rather.
