Hey I’m Ayana, I’m a fourth year medic and I would love to take on the role of events coordinator for SFGH this year!
I have just intercalated in Global Health in the Netherlands, which has given me a much deeper understanding to how changing global dynamics and politics can have a devastating and unfair impact on people's experiences of health worldwide. The course also gave me the opportunity to travel and experience first hand, in Colombia and India, the way that societal and systemic inequities limit an individual’s health, as well as their access to education, employment, nutrition and safe shelter. As our world becomes more and more interconnected, I think that gaining more of a global health perspective is super important for future professionals, for both those in healthcare and other fields.
I would love to encourage this conversation and enable more students to engage with global health issues through planning interesting events for the society! I am an organised and creative individual with previous experience as a publicity rep for Friends of MSF, so think I would be a great addition to the committee. I am excited to get planning some new events and hopefully bring some new faces to the society. Thanks for taking the time to read :)!

My name is Nathan, and I'm a 4th-year medical student from Sheffield intercalating in Leeds for the year in International Health. I am applying to be one of your Events Reps for the year.

During my last three years in Sheffield, I have been an active member of Students for Global Health Sheffield, and I have enjoyed engaging with talks, seminars and volunteering. Last year, with the society, we paired with City of Sanctuary Sheffield, an organisation dedicated to caring for refugees and asylum seekers in the city. With the Charity, I attended the drop-in sessions, offering services and advice to asylum seekers in the city. If I got this position, I would combine what I learned from my experience with SFGH Sheffield with the events coordinator role here in Leeds.

As I am studying International Health this year, I will have the opportunity to meet lots of exciting speakers and will be able to invite them to events for SFGH Leeds. My timetable also gives me lots of time to be able to focus on being a member of the committee.

I envision organising events that captivate and engage our audience. We will create spaces that foster dialogue, critical thinking, and knowledge sharing by curating thought-provoking panel discussions, workshops, and guest lectures. These events will encourage participants to actively participate, ask questions, and contribute to the global health discourse.

Outside my studies, I regularly volunteer with a charity called COMAC. They provide recycled bikes to Sheffield-based refugees as a healthy mode of transport. By fixing donated bikes, I have enjoyed helping to provide an affordable and sustainable transport solution in my local area. I have seen that the University of Leeds has a similar project, and I plan on working with The Student Action for Refugees Bike Project to continue this work in Leeds.

Hi everyone! My name is Donna, I am a fourth-year medical student hoping to join Students for Global Health as an Events Coordinator this year! If you’re reading this you likely have an interest in global health, and likely recognise the chasm that remains between the poorest and richest countries globally. The enormity of this health inequity is daunting. Hence, I want to ensure Students for Global Health continue to be an open space for discussion, education and fundraising so that we may make small but significant changes towards this cause. As an Events Coordinator, I would be keen to connect individuals who are campaigning for global health with those who would like to be. My previous role as a Social Media Officer for Street Doctors has equipped me with the necessary skills to educate and connect kindred individuals. Further, visiting India whilst living in the UK has developed a nuanced understanding of the social, political, and economic differences which ultimately define health infrastructures. As medical professionals it is essential for us all to recognise how these macroscopic structures affect us in microscopic ways. Vote for me as Events Coordinator and I will happily facilitate fun events to make just this happen (tasty food will also be a defining feature of these sessions!!) ;)
