Being part of LUUMCC has been the highlight of my time here at Leeds, as it has been for so many others. While this is obviously due to the excellent sporting and social elements of the club, I believe that the support and safety the club provides for its members is also a major reason for its success. This is a club which genuinely cares for its members, a truly valuable thing. I believe that the task of maintaining and improving this sense of inclusion, wellbeing, and safety is one that I could achieve.

As a responsible and level-headed person, I can make assessments of situations and ensure that our member’s wellbeing is always at the centre of the club's priorities. I also have experience of safeguarding having worked as a coach and bar manager at my cricket club at home. This means that at all club events, from training to socials, I will be able to ensure that members are able to get the most enjoyment out of the club as possible.

I will also be present and easy to contact should any of our members want to reach out to someone to discuss issues involving the club, or to do with their health and wellbeing more generally. I am an approachable and friendly person who attends many club events (I have missed just three socials this year) so members will know me and my role in the club, allowing me to fulfil my position better.

More generally, I have a lot of experience working in teams such as our committee from when I was at school, through my experience working, and up until now. I would be a valuable and reliable member of the committee, able help with other tasks and ensure all parts of the club are thriving.

As social media secretary this year, the best, and the most important thing I’ve been involved in is the clubs charity work. From staying up for 24 hours on the bounce to meet our Movember runners in between each set, to booking and organising the charity ‘Opening Up Cricket’ talk for both the men’s and women’s clubs, it is safe to say I have dived in, head first, to every opportunity to raise awareness for mental well-being and men’s health.

As someone who has experienced negative mindsets and bad mental health before, not just in regards of me, but from those around me as well, I have the experience and maturity around the most difficult of topics and situations to suit the role of safety and welfare officer. Although I come across as pretty loud and jokey, those who know me know that if I see someone struggling, I’m always the first to go and put my arm around them and offer my support.

As your safety and welfare officer, I would ensure we continue to provide that community feeling that makes UoLMCC the society it is today. As someone who has experience with every different group in the club, scoring for the 1s, being in main squad and helping with the attendance register most weeks, attending all but 2 socials this year, and even attending a few dev squad sessions, along with my prior experience of being on the committee as social media sec, and the roles and responsibilities this has brought, I believe I have the knowledge, the maturity and the listening abilities to be the perfect candidate for this role.

Moses

LUUMCC has been the focal point of my first year at university, making it a year that I will look back upon incredibly fondly. Although there are numerous things that I have been incredibly impressed by at the club, the standout for me has been the amazing work done to ensure the welfare of its members, as well as the amazing work promoting men’s mental health and raising staggering amounts for charity. Therefore, as someone who loves charity and men’s mental health as much as Sean Sullivan loves Claire Bruce, I believe I would be able to continue this amazing work in the role of Safety and Welfare Officer. I, myself, have struggled with my own mental health in the past, and it is something that I am open about in the belief that I can help others by doing so. As Welfare Officer, I would love to continue keeping the club a safe place for all its members. I have had experience in a safeguarding role during my time at school, being a head of house which meant I was there to look out for around 120 pupils, being there for anyone who was struggling. Furthermore, being someone who revels in the occasional jog around Headingley, I would look to continue the excellent job done this year with the Movember charity, continuing the great success that was the 24-hour run, raising money for an excellent cause.
