I'm so outrageously old that I think I'll need a job where I can talk to people my age. I was alive for the turn of the millennium for Christ sake, if I'm not made for this I don't know who is.

I think in years gone by this has been a role which it has been very easy to overlook but it is something which I would love to show just how influential it can be.

When I think ahead to myself in my late 20s, having just about let go of the idea that I can become a cricketer and working a 9-5 in London which I will inevitably hate, I will look back favourably on my university days. Obviously, LUUMCC will form a large part of these memories because, my god, what a good club it is.

As Alumni sec, I’d love to challenge the idea that your involvement with the club finishes at graduation minus the one or two trips you make back for the ball or a golf day in the immediate years after you have left. I’d want to draw inspiration from other societies such as the Medics society who have huge alumni support and alumni events which people continue attend throughout their 20s and 30s.

To start with, I’d set up an Alumni Summer and/or Christmas Socials in London which would be open to any former LUUMCC members to attend and share fond memories from their time in the club or to talk about the times they got it terribly wrong at front left. This event would ensure that alumni feel ever-connected to this great club and could act as a well-needed source of fundraising for the club where donations from (hopefully) wealthy alumni could help replenish the club’s coffers.

I’d use this event to increase the connection we have with our alumni and therefore hope that more alumni choose to attend the ball. This echoes a sentiment from Mikey Brown (2020/21 Club Captain for those who don’t know him) who thinks that the ball should be an event which people feel they can attend throughout their 20s and 30s. Personally, I think this is something we can all agree is a great prospect.

In due course, Alumni events could be extended to a 1st XI vs Alumni summer fixture or London-based golf days. (No, I’m not anti-Leeds, this is just where everyone from Leeds ends up).

LUUMCC has been a wonderful source of enjoyment, friendship and, sporting happiness for all of us and there is no reason why this should stop at graduation. As your Alumni Sec I’d hope to set in motion the idea that people feel truly connected to and engaged with the club for life.
