Hi, I’m Sacha, and I’m running to be your Welfare Officer for next year!

It's really important to me that this society remains a place where people feel comfortable turning up, long time or new member. I'd like to help contribute to that welcoming environment that made me feel so at home when I started uni last year.

Welfare, for me, is more than just responding to problems as they come up: it's about making the environment as positive and friendly as possible in the first place. This is why I want to introduce weekly welfare coffee chats/game'n'yap sessions - relaxed, open to everyone - a space to talk, decompress, or just be around people with no pressure.

That being said, I'm no stranger to responding to problems as they come up - I have a (albeit low-level xd) peer mentoring qualification from MIND, so I've plenty of experience with one-to-one counsel. I'm going to introduce a clear, low-pressure support pathway: an anonymous form, with a clear explanation of what happens after reporting. My DMs will obviously always be open if you want to have an informal chat about anything as well - you shouldn't have to wait until something is ‘serious enough’ to talk to someone.

I also want continue improving the experience at events we already run, making it easier for new members to feel included and less intimidating to get involved, by having designated "approachable people" at socials to help new members get settled in.

Alongside that, I’ll make sure there are clear, tangible ways to raise concerns or ask for support, and regularly check in with members so we can keep improving how the society feels for everyone. I'll implement termly “How Are We Doing?” anonymous check-in forms so I know what there is we can improve on, rather than having anyone feel there's an assumption that everything's fine.

Some of my oldest friends I've made through shared interests like video games, and the communities that form around them. My goal is to make this community one which people genuinely enjoy sharing those interests - and can do so without any barriers whatsoever.
