Hey everyone! I’m Ming, and I’ll be in my second year doing Computer Science in September. As a casual The Gryphon reader in my first year, please allow me to convince you why I would be the best possible choice for being your treasurer for 2026/27 😊.
The Gryphon is at its best when writers, editors, designers, photographers, social media teams and readers all feel supported — and that starts with a Treasurer who treats the budget as more than a spreadsheet. I’m running because I want The Gryphon’s money to work harder for the people who make the paper happen and those who enjoy it in their free time.
Here are the five reasons you should vote for me:

In 2025/26, I served as Marketing Secretary for the Charles Morris Social Committee, where our committee won the Most Inclusive Community Award — something I am incredibly proud to have contributed to.
Although my official role focused on marketing, our committee did not have a Treasurer, which meant that I, alongside other committee members, also took responsibility for managing the committee’s finances to organize events for Charles Morris residents throughout the year.
This gave me direct experience of the kind of organizational skills, careful budgeting, practical decision-making and accountability that a Treasurer needs. I understand that society money has to be handled responsibly, but also creatively: it should ultimately be used to its fullest potential. That is exactly the approach I would bring to The Gryphon.

As part of the Charles Morris Social Committee, I helped organise large-scale events for the entire accommodation with massive attendences, including the Charles Morris Winter Ball and Summer Barbecue.
These were not small, low-stakes events: they required careful planning, responsible spending, coordination with different people, and the ability to make a budget stretch while still delivering something memorable. This experience taught me how important it is to balance ambition with practicality.
As Treasurer, I would bring that same approach to The Gryphon — making sure we use our funding wisely, but never timidly, so that all events feel genuinely worthwhile.

As Treasurer, I would make financial transparency a priority by publishing clear monthly spending summaries, so readers and members can see how the society’s money is being used and why.
The Gryphon belongs to its contributors, readers and committee members — so its finances should not feel distant, confusing or hidden away.
I would also make sure members have a real voice in spending decisions through Instagram story polls, Q&As and feedback requests, allowing people to suggest what they want more funding to go towards, whether that is events, merchandise or resources for different sections. My aim would be to create a budget that is not only responsible, but responsive: shaped by the people who make The Gryphon what it is.

As Treasurer, I would not simply manage the money The Gryphon already has — I would be proactive in finding ways to bring in more. I would look for suitable sponsorships, grants and external funding opportunities that align with The Gryphon’s values and protect its independence.
Extra funding would mean more freedom for the society. A good Treasurer should not only be careful with spending but also ambitious about growth. I would work to make sure The Gryphon has the financial backing it needs to be more exciting, more professional and more rewarding for readers and contributors alike.

My core aim as Treasurer would be to make The Gryphon’s budget feel exciting, purposeful and more valuable to its members.
I want to increase funding for contributors working on ambitious investigations or creative projects, so that strong ideas are not limited by lack of resources.
Furthermore, I would also optimise the budget to improve the quality and scale of socials and launch parties, making The Gryphon feel like a more active community.
Beyond this, I would support funding for special print editions of the magazine or Gryphon merch, helping us build a stronger identity both on campus and beyond.
Most importantly, I would work towards organising a large end-of-year Media Ball, with awards and prizes for top contributors, so the writers, editors, photographers, designers and committee members who make The Gryphon possible receive the recognition they deserve.
