I would like to be a PALS4 co-lead this year as I firmly believe that attending the PALS teaching sessions during 4th year was an enormous contributor to helping me pass my exams. I would like to give the next 4th year students the same dedicated teaching and support that I received. I am also passionate about teaching and learnt about it in depth in my intercalated degree in Applied Health (Medical Education). During this intercalation year, I taught 1st year students in body systems and regular sessions with the 2nd year students in I&P. This has helped me to understand how students learn best and, drawing on the teaching sessions I attended this year with PALS4, I am confident that I will be able to produce materials for the 4th year students that will be most beneficial to them. I would hugely appreciate the opportunity to give back to PALS and to further improve my teaching skills by being a PALS4 co-lead.

Supporting fellow students is something I feel strongly about and having the opportunity to do that through the most difficult, but enjoyable, year of medical school (so far) makes me believe that the role of PALS4 co-lead would be perfect for me. The online PALS teaching sessions were vital in my revision for my fourth-year exams this year, so I understand and appreciate the benefits this role can have for my fellow students.

Wanting to further my understanding and skills in medical education I undertook and completed the Applied Health (Medical Education) course during my intercalation year at the University of Leeds. This involved teaching foundation year students on the Introduction to Dentistry and Medicine course, where I lead both in-person and online sessions. By leading these sessions, throughout the year I trialled various teaching methods finding collaborative approaches proved the most engaging. Using these approaches enabled me to build a rapport with the students. Exploring educational theory and marking the foundation year students’ OSCE’s provided insight and experience that I can carry forward to advise fourth years on how to efficiently prepare for exams. My dissertation addressed the experience of medical students throughout their years of study and found that further holistic support is needed. I believe PALS ethos focuses on establishing this. I am continuing to explore this within my ESREP and hope further findings can benefit students.

I want to carry on teaching into my career and would love to build my experience through involvement with PALS4.

My name is Lauren and I have just completed 4th year. After a really long and stressful year, I was so grateful to have had the opportunity to take part in mock OSCEs and teaching sessions hosted by PALS and other societies. The chance to practice OSCE technique and receive teaching from recent 4th year students with helpful tips and tricks definitely made me feel much more confident going into exams.

Going forwards, I would love to be involved in helping the upcoming 4th year students in a similar way with mock OSCEs and teaching sessions. I would especially like to prioritise beginning revision sessions earlier in the academic year, and consider introducing new ways of teaching such as smaller group mentoring programmes. I would also like to consider putting on structured crash course sessions for students before the sequential examinations.

In terms of my previous teaching experiences, I intercalated after 3rd year in Medical Education and really enjoyed teaching the Gateway to Medicine students as part of my degree. I always took the approach of structuring sessions around exam technique and practice questions, while avoiding giving unnecessary excess knowledge. This was based on my own experiences preparing for exams and being really overwhelmed with the amount of content and trying to determine exactly what we needed to know. I also enjoyed teaching a PALS3 session earlier in the year and would love the opportunity to get more involved in the society in my final year as the PALS4 co-lead.

Hello, I'm Naili. I have a special interest in medical education and am passionate about teaching and learning new skills and information together as a group. My aim, if I was to be elected, is to support the year 4 students learning, by organising focused teaching earlier in the term and producing short - concise notes focusing on understanding the basics that are expected of a Foundation year doctor .More importantly, I would like to aspire others to learn the knowledge as a way to improve ourselves as future Doctors and also to have fun while doing it.
In terms of commitment, I was a president for a small non-profit organisation for Malaysian students based in the UK (EMAN UKE) previously. Therefore, I assure you, I will be fully committed to this role and hopefully will be able to encourage, support, and help others to love learning and at the same time understand the contents of Year 4 many topics. I am a very organised, hard-working, and motivated individual. I am also a great team player and very sociable in a friendly manner. PALS has always been excellent in terms of supporting students in their learning by doing focused sessions and making it enjoyable and interesting and I would like to continue that work in the future.
