Hi everyone, I’m Hollie and I am running for Cutting Edge Speciality Representative. I believe that I am highly suited to this role as this past year I have intercalated in an MSc in Clinical Anatomy and Education, gaining both knowledge and contacts in a wide variety of surgical specialities. I would like to utilise these skills, in aiding medical students to explore different surgical specialities and career avenues by organising talks and events given by surgeons from all walks of life. I have previously held publicity representative roles on both MedSoc and the Leeds Anatomy Society, and so I believe that I possess the necessary team-working and communication skills required for this role. I am particularly interested in paediatric surgery, neurosurgery and general surgery, however I would like to organise events from across all of the surgical specialities. I believe that I would be a great asset to the Cutting Edge committee, in helping to further develop the society in addition to collaborating with like-minded individuals.

I'm James and I'm in fourth year. I want to do neurosurgery. I have done some placements with the neurosurgery department in the LGI and have come to know them well. I've also worked on some publications with them. I think I would be well placed to ask one of them to give a talk or two about the career and getting involved in surgery as a medical student. I am also due to do my elective in the USA with the neurosurgical department in the University of Nebraska Medical Centre.

Although it's obvious where my interest lies, I can give practical advice on how to get involved in the surgical specialty that you're interested in, as well as on how to start building your portfolio.

I would be grateful to serve as Speciality Rep as I have strong desire to help facilitate events specific to particular surgical domains, especially developing networks and widening access to particular specalities that are otherwise lesser explored. I have previously served as treasurer of Psyched and Vice Pres of Cardio Soc, strengthening essential skills in team working, communication as well as effective organisation. I believe adopting this role would help me contribute greatly to the society, work with a fantastic like minded committee and aid my developing interest in surgery
