Hi everyone, my name is Zara, I’m going into 2nd year, and I would love to be the next Pre-Clinical Rep for Cutting Edge! I’ve had the privilege of gaining indispensable experiences and advice from my participation in the society this year. Being able to be in regular contact with my cardiothoracic surgeon mentor through the mentor scheme has really helped give me an understanding of surgery as both a career and lifestyle, and the steps I can take early on in medical school to aid me. This has made me realise the value of thinking about a surgical portfolio in Pre-Clinical years, which is an opportunity I would love to afford fellow students next year, especially by building awareness of the career and clearing common misconceptions that can cause students to discard the idea of being a surgeon despite having so much potential. My previous experience leading societies in sixth form has helped me with the creativity, drive and motivation to coordinate unique, engaging events that can cater to a variety of students and attract new members. Also, I look forward to aiding students with their anatomy; in-person as well as virtually for maximum outreach, and helping fellow committee members with all the amazing Cutting Edge events throughout the year.

I am an upcoming third year medical student with a strong interest in surgery, writing to apply for the Pre-Clinical Representative position for Cutting Edge. My strong interest in surgery and commitment to teaching make me an ideal candidate for this position.


During my first two years of academic study, I have developed a solid foundation in anatomy, physiology, and related medical conditions, reflected by A* in the final formative result. I also put passion into teaching, with which I have designed and led two successful PALS revision sessions, receiving positive feedback from first year students. I believe my knowledge and commitment will enable me to communicate and work effectively with other like-minded colleagues to organize engaging activities and design relevant teaching sessions to help more students with the same passion in surgery.

Additionally, I have attended several surgical talks, one conference, and have served as a mock patient for the OSCE exam in these two years. The efficiency and clarity of the organization, the smooth cooperation within the members, and the level of quality of every activity have shown me everyone’s dedication to the society’s aim and goal, and I am eager to be part of this mission.

I am confident that my enthusiasm for surgery and dedication to excellence enables me to effectively represent the society and its reputation in Leeds medical school, and I am eager to contribute to Cutting Edge's mission and initiatives.
