Hi everyone, my name is Tom Sturt and I wish to put myself forward for the role of Vice President of Cutting Edge Leeds for the 2023/24 academic year! I have spent the past 2 years as an avid member of Cutting Edge and was fortunate to have held the position of Pre-Clinical Rep in the outgoing committee. During this time, I have attended, facilitated and organised multiple events with society, including conferences, teaching events and most recently an anatomy revision series which won 'Best Virtual Initiative' at the Worsley Awards this year. As a dedicated member, I now look to move into a position where I can continue to bring those with common interest in surgery together and make positive contributions by supporting the wider society/ committee and the incoming President.

In the coming year, I would like to build on the society's wealth of current successes, for example: by increasing specialist, collaborative events between our surgical society and those of other Universities/ national organisations; delivering events to raise the profile of students wishing to pursue surgery from currently underrepresented backgrounds; and finally by facilitating opportunities for our members to liaise with surgeons/ practice surgical skills to begin building a competitive surgical portfolio from today!

Over the summer, I've been selected to attend an event in the Netherlands focussing on cardiac surgery where I aim to develop connections, skills and ideas to drive forward the initiatives and opportunities that Cutting Edge can offer in the coming year. I wish to continue to be part of a society which shares insight, opportunity and innovation in the pursuit of surgery - I'd be very grateful of your vote. Thank you.

Hello everyone, I’m Angela the current Cutting Edge secretary. This year I am interested in being the vice president of the society. I was part of the EXEC team within the society, therefore I have already learned how the society runs. I have been involved in decision making regarding funding and events, so I am prepared to take on more responsibilities.

If I’m elected as vice president, I will focus on finding the best way for the society to support more disadvantaged students who are eager to get into surgery. I plan to continue the popular suturing skills series, but also introduce current medical students to the new innovative strategies developing within the surgical field, such as surgery alongside interventional radiology. Another idea I would like to introduce is giving a teaching opportunity to non-committee members, especially fourth and fifth year medical students who have completed a research project, to share and teach younger years strategies and ways to get ahead of the game.

I would be honoured to help run the best academic society of the Uni of Leeds!
