Hi everyone! I’m Jack, a second-year Language and Linguistics student, and I’m running for President of the Linguistics Society. The society is a fantastic space to meet course mates, get academic support, explore career opportunities, and have fun—and if elected, I’d love to continue and grow that.
Why me?
I’m passionate about linguistics and community. I’ve held leadership roles for the last four years—leading a student team of over 90 people in secondary school and currently co-leading the editorial team for JoULAB (the Journal of the Undergraduate Linguistics Association of Britain). I’ve also organised charity drives, launched well-being initiatives, and built networks with linguistics professionals. I want to bring this experience to the role and help the society thrive.
My goals:
Connection – In first year, I found lectures engaging but not always the easiest place to meet people. Our course is diverse, and with limited contact hours, it can be hard to connect. I want the society to be the space that brings linguistics students together—to make friends, support one another, and share the uni experience.
Opportunity – Although we’re a social group, the society also has academic potential. If elected, I’ll help connect members with research, career talks, linguistics events, and SLT opportunities. I also want to introduce a peer mentorship scheme—a relaxed, friendly way to get advice from students further along in the course. Think study tips, extra reading recs, or where to get the best kebab in Leeds (spoiler: Pitza Cano).
Awareness – I’m confident speaking to large groups and would actively promote the society in lectures and online to boost membership. More members mean better socials, a stronger sense of community, and wider access to opportunities.
Continuity – I’d aim to keep the society active and relevant throughout the academic year. That means regular committee meetings, term-based events and focus areas, and check-ins over the holidays. This ensures support and social life are maintained from Welcome Week to summer.
