My name is Grace, and I’m an English Literature and Creative Writing student in my second year. During my time studying at the University of Leeds, I have run into multiple accessibility issues due to my disabilities. I am totally blind and a wheelchair user with a slew of other health problems, which means that I am incredibly passionate about inclusivity and equality in general. I have been the English Society’s Equality and Diversity Secretary for the past year, and have ensured total wheelchair accessibility at each social, as well as creating a Suggestions Box for the foyer where our members can give us any feedback they may have. I also have connections with Guide Dogs U.K., and have had the dogs in for people to meet during English Teas, which is definitely something I will continue doing if I am re-elected. As well as focusing on disability, I would like to highlight discrimination relating to sexuality, race and gender through relevant monthly book recommendations posted on the society’s Instagram, and giving a platform to minority authors and poets.
