Hi, I’m Lola! I will be going into my second year of medicine in September and would love to be able to take on the responsibility of being the MSRC Equality and Inclusion Representative. Not only am I hugely passionate about tackling the inequalities I face at university but also those faced by people who come from a plethora of backgrounds and identities.
A bit about me is that I am part of the LGBTQ+ community, use they/them pronouns and come from a working class, mixed ethnicity background. I am also hugely interested in learning about other people’s cultures, religions, identities etc. and aim to bring to light the beauty of our different identities as a cohort as well as actively working against inequalities faced by us as medical students due to this, including everyday issues as well as more imbedded issues within the medical school. I aim to focus on representing and voicing your thoughts on equality and inclusion as a medical student and spread the love of learning about others and its importance as we become practicing doctors.
I am currently taking part in a research project to improve academic personal tutoring for underrepresented students across the university and hope to continue my work as well as apply what I have learnt from this as Equality and Inclusion Representative next year. I continuously aim to be open minded and confident with everything I do both within the university and outside of it and am also proud to say those I have worked with within the med school and outside of it have said I am easy to talk to and an approachable leader and teammate. I believe these qualities to be among the most important for someone in this role and I promise to continue being approachable and a friendly face across the next year and across my time at university.

Hi, I'm Lucy and hopefully over the coming year I'll be the equality and inclusion rep for MSRC. I would really like to be able to liaise more with the medical school to bring up often very topical and sensitive issues that remain close to a lot of people's hearts. MSRC have been able to make a massive impact on the curriculum and student well being which is something I really have respect for and want to be involved in. While the medical school is constantly under review, I would like to step in to ensure that everyone thinks they are being heard during there time at Leeds. This is something that is vital in every situation. In previous roles outside of MSRC I have had to ensure I'm approachable and confident to speak up, both of which will ensure I can support you in the best way possible. Now with the addition of freedom to speak up guardians I feel it is the time to make any and all complaints known so we can try to improve situations as best as possible

Hi all, it’s that time when I am once again asking for your vote - this time running to be one of your new Equality and Inclusion Reps!

As many of you know, I have had two consecutive years of experience on the MSRC.

As Careers Coordinator during my second year, I reinvigorated the role, bringing with me new ideas and creating a variety of opportunities for students including: Organising Leeds Medical School’s first ever ‘Alternatives to Medicine’ Event and coordinating a Virtual Exchange Programme with a medical school in India.

Then as your Vice-President, I made Equality and Inclusion a priority.

Alongside LGBT* Medics, I designed and campaigned to introduce pronouns to MBChB student name badges. As a result of this proposal, a group of staff and students was established to discuss the proposal, which since developed into the Pronouns Project - a School-wide initiative to develop an inclusive university community, including teaching trans-inclusive practices which I spearheaded during my tenure as VP. I also signed the School of Medicine’s Statement on ‘Supporting the UK Government bill to ban so-called conversion therapy’ on behalf of the MSRC.

This year, I want to continue to build upon the fantastic work of the current reps, hoping to improve representation across the Health Sciences library and surrounding spaces, as well as run several events promoting healthcare in minority communities.

I want to collaborate with Leeds Uni Plus Programme, having come to University via the Access to Leeds Widening Participation scheme, I want to support and engage with students from backgrounds less represented at University by running events in the Worsley building alongside lobbying the Medical School to release further funding for students from widening participation backgrounds.

I believe my experience and familiarity with senior faculty members and committees from my time on MSRC will allow me to succeed in this new role and I am committed to promoting inclusivity by being approachable and accessible!
