Good morning lads,
First of all it has been excellent to be back playing cricket in the last week, and well done to everyone for their successes on the pitch on Wednesday!

Joining LUUMCC back in September 2023, I can wholeheartedly say that it has been the best decision I have made at uni. I love this club more than I love the COAT himself James Patten, which is saying something! I am applying for Welfare secretary as I believe that I hold many of the qualities required for the role.

I would say that I was a friendly and outgoing person, and whilst understanding that university can be hard to settle into for some people, I believe I am equipped to help and guide others that may be struggling, and to give them any advice should they ask for it.

Having worked in three different schools, and dealing with safeguarding issues since I was 17, I know that I can handle dealing with uncomfortable situations, something that isn't easy to manage.

I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know all the freshers this year, and I hope I have been a friendly face to all - I have been present at every sober social and most other events of the year, including the Three Peaks which was an epic day out! If elected as Welfare Officer, I would love to continue sober socials as a way of integration, and expand on the adventurous side and potentially organise a bigger challenge than the Three Peaks!

The one thing this club loves maybe even more than cricket is beer, however I think it is important that people can become involved in the club regardless of alcohol. I would like to organise casual intra club football matches in Hyde Park next year, especially in the first weeks of term, which I think would be a good way for the freshers to meet senior members of the club, outside of socials.

I will expand more on my ideas for next year at the AGM, and would like to congratulate OJ on the fantastic job he has done in this role to date.

I hear the time has come for someone to take on the feat of filling the shoes OJ is leaving behind – with that in mind, I’m putting myself forward for Welfare Sec because I genuinely care about the club and the lads in it.

I’ve been at pretty much every social and event this year (including dragging myself up three Yorkshire hills). As many of you know, I’m a Christian – and I think this role lines up really well with that. Some of you will also know I sometimes drink 0% beer – not only has it been a great way to get stuck in, but it also means that on nights out and socials, if I were to be selected, there’d be (for the most part) a sober Welfare Sec there to deal with the serious/caring side of things.

I also took a gap year – not that this qualifies me for anything specific, but it’s given me a bit more life experience for when things go south. Before Freshers’ Fight Back (also known as LUUMCC’s first waterboarding social?), we had a very serious situation – and I was able to help sort it so the night could still go ahead smoothly. I’d like to think I’ve got decent emotional intelligence. I don’t really struggle myself, but I do know how to spot when someone’s not quite right, and more importantly, where to direct them.

For the newer lads who might not know the club as well yet, I’ve made a conscious effort to invite them along and help them get more stuck in.

If the baton does get passed all the way down from OJ, I’d be keen to keep things moving in the right direction – not just ICB in the mischief toilets?? – but encouraging “father-son” runs and maybe throwing in a sober social or two in term 2. It’d be a good way to help more lads get involved if they missed the earlier ones.

I’d also love to get the occasional social net going – a fun way to build a bit of cohesion between squads, and a good option for those who aren’t so keen on socials.

Hope you’ve all had a good rest over Easter and are enjoying pre-season.

While there’s still plenty of cricket to be played, half an eye is already turning to next year. With that in mind, I’d like to put myself forward to be your Safety and Welfare Officer for next year.

Throughout my first year, LUMCC has been a central part of my Uni experience, giving me the chance to create some brilliant, and some slightly less brilliant, memories (including the adequate bumming I received at Ties from our social secs, which ended with Niall Lovatt dragging me back to Central Village.) But in all seriousness, the club has not only helped me make new friends, but it’s also provided a strong support network of like-minded people. As such I feel it is only fitting I give back to this great club and help the club continue to move forward in the strong direction it already is at.

The network I just spoke of is something I believe to be unique to LUMCC, and it's a key aspect I’d love to continue developing and build on from the great work of the committee and OJ this year.

So, why would I be a good fit for next year’s Welfare Sec?

• I’ve been an active member of the club this year, attending both intermediate and main squad training sessions, getting stuck into socials, and almost making it on tour, Bucha Bucharest!
• I have experience handling pressured scenarios and safeguarding issues through my job as a lifeguard over the past three years.
• I’ve previously mentored younger students at school, helping support their welfare.
• Welfare is something I’m passionate about and I currently sit on the Youth Board of a social mobility charity where welfare is central to what we do.
• Finally, I’d like to think I’m approachable, friendly, and trustworthy.

A few initial ideas I'd look to develop next year (and expand on at the AGM):

• Run a club-wide consultation on welfare topics and launch an anonymous welfare portal for raising concerns or reporting issues.
• Expand sober socials beyond the coffee mornings to include ideas like a Curry Club, or a weekly sports watch-along at the pub with no pressure to drink.
• Organise a Freshers' Week event so new members can meet and socialise before the cricket social antics begin.
• Collaborate with the committee, particularly social media, to run awareness campaigns on key issues like Mental Health, Stress, and Anxiety, with info on where to go for help and who to talk to.
