I am currently starting Year 5 medicine and would love to be the PALS4 co-lead this year. I found the PALS teaching sessions during my 4th year incredibly useful and I want to be able to pass on the information and tips I have learnt throughout my year to the new year 4 students. I would make sure that teaching sessions are relevant and cover the most important learning points, and by doing a ‘top tips’ session early on in the year we can give the new year 4 students the best guidance possible to start learning the year 4 content efficiently from the start of the year. Throughout Uni I have been on several different committees, including being President of Teddy Bear Hospital society, so I know what is important in committee members and how a society committee generally runs. This will be helpful in being part of the PALS committee next year and working alongside the other co-leads to make sure we can create revision sessions that are as helpful as possible!!

After making it out the fiery fourth year furnace, it would be great to use lessons from the pain (and many enjoyable experiences) to pass on some humble pearls of wisdom by being a PALS4 co-lead. I was grateful to receive a lot of amazing teaching throughout 4th year – especially from fellow peers.

There’s been an explosion of new learning resources and online tutorials in recent years – passmed (OG)/quesmed/pulsenotes/bitemedicine to name just a few. I found going through many of these useful but very time consuming. I would hope to create a resource directory highlighting the best parts for each of the Y4 modules and include these in succinct, high-yield teaching sessions.

While difficult, 4th year was definitely the most stimulating year of medical school. Being able to convey the knowledge gained in an easy and digestible form would be a fantastic and enjoyable opportunity to re-visit material and help improve my teaching skills. I’d be happy to be contacted at any point, whether that be about understanding teaching content or just for a friendly chat about about how best to tackle the year.

I would very much like to be considered for PALS4 Co-Lead, as I believe I have the leadership and management skills to succeed in this role. Throughout my medical school journey I have been a strong advocate of widening access to Medicine and supporting school students in their subjects, but now I would like to turn my attention to supporting my current peers.

I have held committee positions every year; notably, I served as Vice President of Brain Leeds, where I demonstrated that I was able to manage and unite committee members, enabling us to function effectively as a team. Using this wealth of experience, I would relish the opportunity to have a more direct impact on medical students’ learning and development as aspiring clinicians.

I have taught Biology online to over 200 school students per class and was a Body Systems tutor in my first year. I have a desire to teach and supplement students’ education, and I feel that I possess the expertise to deliver high-quality, tailored content. Whilst I would like to help organise classes for my own year, I would also like to concentrate on supporting the transition of students to their clinical years and create a “beginners guide” to passing the written exam and OSCE that students can refer to. This could include examples of how to complete core conditions and step-wise solutions for exam questions. I think such a tool would alleviate the anxiety that students are regularly faced with.

I would love to take on this role teaching for PALS4 to continue to explore my passion for education.

I think I would be good at this role due to my previous experience teaching potential medical students through WAMS and first year students on their IDEALS course as part of my Medical Education BSc intercalation degree. My intercalation degree has given me the knowledge and expertise to deliver well constructed lessons in formats that maximise learning, particularly in an online format as my degree took place during the COVID-19 pandemic. This would ensure that the sessions I deliver will be interactive and accessible for as many fourth year students as possible.

I attended many of the PALS4 sessions last year so have a good understanding of what works well within the teaching sessions as well as what is required from those delivering them. I also have a good understanding about what kind of topics are desired by fourth years to tackle for revision.

I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the specialties involved in fourth year, particularly paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology. Therefore, I feel that I engaged well with the content in my own revision and feel confident in delivering sessions on these topics. I hope to pursue paediatrics in the future so have a particular passion for this area of medicine and therefore would be keen to deliver sessions on this. I am also a committee member of LUMPS so could arrange collaborations to maximise attendance.
